I can't figure out why the U.S. Market did not get the FM sound chip. Why was it removed? I am looking for a SMS with a FM mod.

It wasn't removed. The Mark III's FM Expansion is a separate purchase. The JPN Sega Master System, which has the FM chip built-in, was produced after the NA and EU SMS.
    A retarded Sonic.

If you like purchase a model 1 SMS and fit Viletim's FM board. It plugs into the expansion port + 3 wires to solder, job done. SMS2 on the other hand....
Thank you for donating to the Sega 16 bit manuals!

I would love to do this so I can hear Phantasy Star (and other games) with FM sound, but I've heard that the FM functionality was removed for the US version of Phantasy Star. Is that true?

Correct, you would need a Master Everdrive or similar device or the Japanese Cart and either a converter or a Japanese Master System.

Oh, no, there are ROM patches for that, but they would all require a flashcart.

Ah, so the Master Everdrive would be the way to go?

I'd say so, a donor cart is nice if you want the "full" English version of Phantasy Star on your shelf though.

Yeah nobody would miss a common sports game. I think Monopoly could be used, since it has save capability. In fact you could probably keep the insert and booklet from a legit phantasy star if you wanted.

Anyone have some more SMS games to recommend?

Wouldn't I need some sort of ROM programmer for that?

Yep, an EPROM programmer, a soldering iron and optionally a good desoldering iron...... OR, just ask this guy:

    www.thenesdump.com

He has SMS repros. He could probably make you an English FM Phantasy Star.

That would be more convenient! Those tools are spendy.
