Also, what's the point of dumping on a Master System thread? I originally posted: "Who's into the Master System?", not "Who says 'Meh' and prefers the NES?".

I didn't mean it like that. I was just giving an example that I do like 8-bit games, it's just I felt I could live without the SMS. It's impossible to own a ton of systems and actually enjoy them all equally.
Just trying to add a little objectivity into the thread. The SMS is a neat early console to look at for Sega fans, but it was just a weak and poor representative for Sega.
NES ruled the console market in the 80's for a reason. Quality hardware, quality programming, and support. SMS wasn't even a blip on the radar.
Yeah, when I mentioned cheap shipping from Europe before, I should have specified I was mostly buying loose carts. It's easy to find games without boxes on ebay, and they tend to be cheaper. I had some good luck with common (in the UK) games where I was the only one bidding. I managed to get a few games for 1 pound plus shipping each and it worked out to 6 or 7 dollars.Originally Posted by Guntz
Concerning the US market, yes that's completely true... But there's several international users here, where SMS got tons of games. You need to keep that in mind before saying the SMS is weak.
I won't argue that the SMS has good games, but too many consoles is a bad thing. I've sold my Saturn, 3DO and TG16... SMS might be next unless I find reasons to buy games for it.
Well that's good to hear. Are popular games expensive over there too? Only problem I can see is the the pound is strong... Australia's dollar is properly valued but shipping is crazy. Brazil has weak currency but shipping can be risky. Which would you guys go with?
Can I have some lists of "generally good SMS games" to skim through? Please include imports, maybe exclude Tec Toy though. Those are usually overpriced outside of brazil.
It's all good. I like the NES. Heck, I grew up on the Game Boy line!
As an enthusiast of quality video games in general, I believe the SMS didn't get a fair shake, especially in North America. Laws changed in the US and elsewhere as a reaction to Nintendo, then the Genesis came in and wrecked house! The Master System truly had the potential to be a competitor.
I appreciate your opinion!

I keep saying it, the Sega 8-bit consoles are some of the most convoluted and varied from region to region.
The games and hardware (accessories) released varies significantly between Europe, North America, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and Korea.
Quite a number of MSX translations were released for the Korean Master System (Samsung Gam*Boy)
I have a 50-in-1 Korean cart which most notably has a great version of Goonies.

That would be nice. Sega was more popular in Europe, in Australia it was pretty close. In Australia more "everyday" stores sold the Sega stuff like Big W, K Mart. Whereas Nintendo (NES) was more of a la-de-dah sort of stores like Myer, David Jones etc.
Fixed

Lol! I was working at the local toyworld when they sold sega stuff bitd. My brother inlaw is manager there now and they still have the shelves plastered over with sega stickers!

From what I've seen the basic mechanics are similar but the game possesses an entirely new musical score that most commentators hate. Even though the music may not be as good as the original NES title, I still would like to play it. I suspect the game will hold my interest!![]()

I got to say, when I first got my Master System I wasn't too keen on it.
But now, I have to say I love it! Plus you can modify them for S-video the same way that you can with the Sega Genesis!
I'd love to get some more games on mine, it's a shame most games were left in Europe and South America, and that they can be pretty hard to find. Right now my favorite games for the system have to be Castle of Illusion, Sonic 1, Shinobi, and I really like Rambo First Blood Part 2. I still want to get the other Disney games like Lucky Dime Caper.
I think I'm going to keep two games for my PBC and Master Gear adapter, Shanghai and Wonder Boy III. The rest I'm going to use to move my Model 1 SMS.
On the upside, I'm probably going to try out a few import SMS games and see if I like the system better. Castle of Illusion and Sonic 1 look really good and cheap. Maybe Land of Illusion and Asterix too. Any recommendations?
