I recall the main reason why she was rejected is because she simply looked too much like Sally, coupled with the fact that Amy was already the main official game love interest for Sonic.

That's probably why. Why does Sonic's romantic interest have to be pink and clingy? I get that it's funny sometimes, but maybe it's getting stale.

I think we're discussing possibilities of making Sonic plot exposition more fleshed out, but I'm just looking from a 3rd person perspective.

Sonic,Tails,Knuckles,Amy,Rouge,Shadow the main 6 are all fine.

Other characters like Cream,Blaze,The Chaotix,Shade The Echnida,Marine,Silver & even the Chaotix are useful and enough side characters. No more new ones are needed.

I will say this, out of all the characters, Miles "Tails" Prower and Rouge The Bat are the two most enigmatic, most versatile characters ever to be created for the franchise. Tails is unique because he's based off of Japanese mythology, has a loyal personality, is charismatic, incredibly intelligent, and was like the first furry pretty boy video game sidekick who's fanbase has always been predominantly female. The kid was a bishonen before there ever was bishonen.

Its not hard to see why this time around he's now the most popular character. He was downplayed in the previous era.

Rouge's design and complex personality is what makes her so loveable as a character. (I once heard that Rouge was actually supposed to be a Vixen,like an older feminine version of Tails, her prototype is rumored to have been "Jewel The Vixen". SEGA changed her species to a Fruit Bat & gave her the name "Rouge" to add a mysterious,noir style flavor.) I think that's why she's garnered a strong male base.

I think the main problem with Rouge is not only has SEGA yet to reveal her background, but there hasn't been a Sonic game created that can ultilize her abilities as a playable character. SA2 fell short, and although Sonic Heroes & Battle showed that she did have some usefulness and does belong in the playable character roster , she's still hasn't been perfected. I can also say that early on, she was marketed wrong.

The original Genesis 3 all deserve to have female counterparts Sonic has Amy, Tails has Rouge(although she's a bit older) & Knuckles will eventually have Shade.

Also Shadow is Anti Hero. The series needs at least one.
