With games, they're not necessarily "patches" per sé... It's usually something along the lines of "Commercially released expansion pack that just happen to fix bugs/glitches/problems with the original game, and/or balance out the game play, make the engine more stable, etc."
Now, if you want an example of people paying for patches the first thing off the top of my head is Windows 98 SE. (Which Microsoft wasn't forcing anyone to buy, but some people bought them anyways because they got tired of the instability of Windows 98.) Granted it's not a game, but it's something PC gamers had to deal with none the less...![]()
