I don't have any major problems with SA controls apart from the fact that Sonic feels a bit weightless and fake. I like Mario's controls more though because he feels more natural and has many more moves and with little to no practice you can do many advanced moves, long jumps and climb/go wherever you want. I always felt that in Mario 64 i had full control of the character and i could make him do whatever i wanted perfectly..

Oh I don't have a problem pulling off the moves in Mario 64, the problem is pulling them off and actually landing where I wanted to land.

Practice more maybe? I have absolutely no problems whatsoever.

If I threw that same excuse at you about Sonic Adventure you'd flip out about how the game is inherently broken and dogshit.

I shouldn't have to train myself to make jumps that I would normally be able to make if the camera gave me a better view.

But i didn't have problems controlling this game either. It just left less natural that's all. Mario feels like he has weight, sonic not so much.

And i don't think that the game is dogshit (there is Sonic 2006) i just find that some design choices are very very bad.

And I find some of Mario 64's design choices questionable. For example the Camera and the overall repetitive nature of the game. And all I am bringing up in this thread is that I find some of the flaws Sonic Adventure get's overly criticized for exist in Mario 64, and in a few cases I feel that they are far worse in Mario 64.

Some of you are just crybabies because you cant play one game the way you can on another.
What this means is you cant grasp the idea that they are different games.
So of course its going to "feel" "awkward", and if you give it the time and gain the experience you could do what you wish with each title.(within the specs)
You can yap on all day about not being able to get Mario to land where you wanted, but I know for a fact he jumps from climbing an object directly where his back is turned to, where the game "places" you is due to the terrain he is landing on.(inclines)
All in all it was very well done and very playable. If you go into something and don't immediately master it you wanna blast it and say its flawed, when in reality you just suck.
Its attitudes like that that brought us to todays hand-holding games we have today, case closed.

It has nothing to do with the games playing differently or people being crybabies. You know, some people just don't like the same games as you for their own valid reasons.

The problem with landing jumps in Mario I have is tied almost directly to the bad camera system. It doesn't adequately portray the visual information necessary to properly land jumps. I'm constantly overshooting my jumps or coming up too short. Yeah you eventually will get used to it, but getting to that point is a real bitch.

I had wanted to see 3d platformers happen since the '80s, played early experimental stuff like Alpha Waves while patiently waiting for more breakthroughs to occur. I was really impressed with Super Mario 64 and Sonic Adventure. Sure, they had more camera issues than linear Crash Bandicoot or FPS hybrid Jumping Flash type games but they also felt more ambitious to me.

Yeah, you can practice Big Rigs until you master it too, that doesn't make it a perfect game. God I just tried giving the game another chance and all it did was fuel my hatred for it. I was in the snow level with the slide and got stuck behind the pink Bob-omb and a tree. And since I couldn't move the camera effectively to figure a safe way out I fell to my death. During the actual slide part the big penguin kept blocking the camera and I couldn't see and went flying off the edge.

There's a very big difference between practicing the games mechanics and memorizing levels so you can beat the camera when it fucks up.

my memory of the mario 64 camera....keep rotating it until you find an angle that works, continue playing. Atleast mario 64 lets you have control of the camera.

Yeah sonic 1 is pretty terrible, just for the difficulty.

Regarding mario 64 controls there is a delay from when you press the button and mario turns but that's part of the fun. People don't turn on a dime in real life.

I think this everytime I watch a youtube video of some guy playing a game while bitching about it. I think some people honestly just like to bitch.

How about when you use the behind Mario always camera mode?
I think Mario 64 is pretty good at giving you multiple angles, even though some don't stay.
But most players who don't like the auto (lakito) cam, can at least play with the Mario cam.
Also those Mario 64 vids are tool assisted. Pretty much means we all suck and the computer wins.
The game is good and we don't react fast enough. And flying with cap Mario is great, wherever you see his shadow is exactly where Mario will land if you press stomp while in the air.

Sonic 1 is not hard, all you need to do is stay clear of squishy moving objects, death pits, and keep at least one ring.
Mario 1 is harder, and the ghost n goblins game is very hard IMO.
