Oh I'm not saying Super Metroid was easy by any means. Just that where some of these kids are getting stuck are some of the simplest parts in the game. It's funny because they've become so used to handholding that they aren't even trying to think or figure it out on their own. They are getting stuck around the first 3 power ups for crying out loud. The normal thought process should be "Gee, I just got this new ability, maybe I should try using it."
To be fair it didn't really need one. It was a pretty linear game - branching paths were confined to "zones" and you could never go to far forward because of the lava that needed to be lowered. At worse, you backtracked a few steps to take the other branch offered when you reached a wall, and at best you were constantly moving forward. Metroid 2 isn't nearly as labyrinth as the original, which is much more difficult than any other metroid game, especially blind.

Super Metroid is by far my favorite SNES game. I've been in love with it since I first played it at a friends house in 1993.
While I could be wrong, I don't think that's right for the release date. You see, I was in Kindergarten from 1993-1994. And I specifically remember playing it at my friends house when I was in Kindergarten. My family moved at then end of that school year and if the game was only out for 2 months I doubt my memories of playing it would be this vivid. In fact, I specifically remember over Christmas break playing it. I also remember that his dad had a save for each different ending at one point.
The April 1994 release date seems to stem entirely from Wikipedia who get's it from Gamespot. Gamespot has had release dates wrong in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if this one is wrong too. I've seen the date October 10th 1993 also thrown around for it, and honestly that fits in much better with what I remember.
It sure does, but I just find everything so awesome about that game. Each level is unique and not like one another, the music is Konami (nuff' said), the gameplay is overall really fun and challenging (not too hard, just about right), the length of the game is perfect, and so on. My friend complained about the controls saying they were a bit NES-ish (whatever that means), but I never had a problem with them.
What do you want to bet that most/all of those folks asking how to play Metroid are Kinect users. It's been demonstrated that most Kinect games can be "played" by just standing and flapping your arms randomly while the "game" plays itself.
I turned 14 in 1994, I remember it coming out when I was 14. 1993 I spent whoring out secret of mana and starfox. Then again, I live in a different part of the world than thee. Atleast you're not claiming you played super metroid when you were 2 haha.
The music I never was big on, the gameplay was pretty decent and the graphics are well done, atleast to me. Controls are fine, when I think of "nes-ish" controls I think of four directions only.
