Not defending the rest of his post but I agree about Mega Man. I feel the Mega Man games are on the easier side compared to the average NES game but it's hard for me to be a fair judge of them as somebody who has played through them all dozens of times. You have unlimited continues and your weapons and special items make seemingly difficult segments into trivial ones. It's basically a series of games that are only as hard as you want to make them. The only one that I'd consider unfairly hard is the first one since there are no passwords and the level design is uneven compared to the more polished later installments.

Even the easiest one requires some patience though. However was the difficulty really a good thing? It's an interesting point to argue.

Games were hard back then because they were both taking design elements from the arcades and because it was the easiest way to extend the length that a person would spend with the game without necessarily having to make the game very long. The developer really didn't give a damn if you beat the game or not.

With more modern, cinematic games we're looking at interactive entertainment that has a story to tell. The developer wants you to beat the game so they hold your hand and make sure you get that story.

Personally I think both of these approaches to game design have their place. I can still get the thrill of conquering an old nail-biting action game or I can enjoy a good interactive story.

The problem with Super Metroid being 30 cents is that I can't just buy it for 30 cents. I have to buy it for $10 since that's the lowest amount you can put in your Wii U funds. I will have money left over and NOTHING is ever going to cost 70 cents or $X.70. It's just like Xbox Live. It sucks my unwiped ass. I will not buy anything from any Nintendo or Microsoft store unless I can simply pay what the items costs and no more. Reason: I'm not an idiot with my finances.

That's not true in the least. With the Wii U you can pay only what it costs and not have to add one flat amount of funds. Super Metroid cost me $0.32 and my bank account is reflected as such.

I beat Metroid 2 *ONCE*, and I had help from maps in a issue of Nintendo Power.

I remember telling someone I beat "Link's Awakening" without ever dying, apparently this is a feat of superhuman ability.

Probably my proudest moment is playing castlevania dracula x on the snes start to finish the hard route getting the good ending without dieing once.

Why I love super metroid so much is it's the perfect blend of obviousness and confusion at the same time. Unfortunately back in 1994 I got the super metroid players guide when I renewed my nintendo power subscription. I'm pretty certain the first time I cleared super metroid I did it without the guide. After clearing the game I used my guide to get 100% of everything. I love games that make you think a little, and screaming for help to me ruins the experience. I get annoyed when I play a modern game that has some annoying thing pop up telling me what to do constantly. How "easy" super metroid is depends on how many life powerups you collect along the way. If you don't find hidden energy tanks I'm sure the game could be quite difficult.

I'm not going to be angry at what gaming is like these days. I don't enjoy hand holding games at all but if other people enjoy it, good for them. I'm just glad todays generation can enjoy one of my top 5 favourite games of all time so easily. The only thing that would annoy me is people forgetting such a true classic of a game like super metroid. Would I mind if they edited in some sort of flying metroid to give you tips on what to you? Absolutely not. It's a great game, let people play it how they want to play it.

Oh, ignoring my points because of my age, eh? Funny you mention Castlevania, because I played that game when I was two and each year of my life it has been played to death. I do see the issue of this, and I'm being far more reasonable about this than you. I grew up with retro games when I was a kid. And what does the fact you could beat Castlevania II before I went to preschool have to do with anything? Of course you could! Because I could barely play Video Games at such a young age! You know what else? I have 1,700 Video Games, no emulators or downloads, so yeah, judging me because of my age? It's people like you who are the problem with the retro gaming community.

Epic lie. I played mario 3 when I was two years old, before I could walk or remember anything! Owning a lot of games doesn't prove you're a retro gamer. Anyone can own something and not play it, or use internet guides to become an instant "master". "It's worth mentioning" that I was 14 years old when super metroid was released, I got my hands on a copy and I cleared it. I made it further than "near the end", it really wasn't as harsh as nes titles I grew up playing. Super metroid is quite an easy game with enough patience, without any tips or walkthroughs.

Really though, me trying to "prove myself" just shows how stupid it looks so you shouldn't have to do it either. Don't get gkdair get to you it's what he wants. You don't have to "prove" to anyone that you're really a retro gamer and not a fake. Gkdair seems to automatically count people of a certain generation as fake retro gamers regardless. Seeing people who were born after the 16 bit generation was dead who appreciate this great period of gaming always puts a smile on my face. I think if anything, this proves that the current generation certainly does have good taste.

I do agree though that most modern games give too many things away to a point where I become bored with the game due to lack of mental stimulation.

alot of you guys sound like a group of grumpy old men! Put away your dentures and stop being so condescending! Sure some of today's games tend to coddle the player a little too much but there are still a good amount of games that test a player's intestinal fortitude on screen! Stop kidding yourselves into thinking that today's gamer is any different from gamers back in the day. I have to agree with a comment made by Black_Tiger: The only thing that has changed is the internet and how people, both young and old alike, impulsively post their reactions and comments on social media. In the 80s and 90s, kids would seek out the answer in a magazine, via a gaming hotline or word of mouth. Today, information is much more readily available and if you are unable to find the answer to your question, you always have the option of asking online in order to illicit an immediate response.

games should be fun they are entertainment they are not "srs bznzz" they are just interactive fiction nothing more
