They don't really have to keep it since you can crack the games on a PC and nobody would fault you for it in this case. Also Steam does not have a monopoly on PC games.
Modchips and bootlegs have, and no doubt will continue, to be a thing on consoles as well. And Microsoft has no monopoly on console games either.

I just don't see the doom and gloom in the situation like some do. If MS decides to shut down all access to their system and shutter their doors with a big middle finger to all the gamers then you are in the same boat as you are if steam did the same thing.

You can either shrug your shoulders and accept all your stuff is gone, or you can mod/patch it and keep using it. Both systems are imperfect save that there is a general sense of good will towards steam as a corporate entity that people trust.

MS is a company that wants to make money, they rely on the consumers not actively hating them. I don't see them deciding to completely shaft all of their customers just because they have their money and, "fuck you we're evil hahaha".
They WANT to be in it for the long haul.. so sure, they will absolutely be trying to coddle people who give them big money (like the used game thing) but they are going to try and sugar coat it in ways the consumers can handle.

If something REALLY doesn't work, you can bet they will make a quick turn around to try and smooth things over... just like Sony did coming off the ps2 into the ps3.

Maybe this is Ms's turn to learn some harsh lessons and try and recover. Or maybe they will handle it pretty well from the get go. Will see as things unfold.

hahaha i had to google that reference, and you're right it totally is!

oh man, were I a billionaire I'd totally buy up Sega and make that damn VR console I spoke about earlier,
console would be shaped like the Okama Gamesphere, and would light up in a different color depending if you're chatting in the VR room or gaming.

not only would it be a sweet console but also a nice house decoration!

It's not doom and gloom for me since I have no interest on the console (I do like seeing MS fail hard, they deserve it with how badly they treat both developers and users). I was just explaining to you the why.
Again, the steam case is not the same. That *if* before "steam did the same thing" is a big if. You're comparing a company known for abandoning projects and regular user/developer hostility to one that has consistently delivered and made a community promise on the matter (doesn't hold much water, but it is something, unlike the typical microsoft avoidance). Heck, steam doesn't even force developers to use DRM if they don't want to. It's an issue of trust and probability. An investment on a steam game is both much lower (lower prices, sales) and much safer. You can't compare a modchip with downloading a 1mb crack either.

I'm excited for the Steam Box. It's crazy that Microsoft and Valve are so close to each other (location), but so different in their philosophies.

I'm expecting fortress warfare like Rampart. Grab your helms!

I'd buy this for a dollar:

But really what I want is this:

    and this:

But the absolute ultimate would be Sega, Konami, SNK, Capcom, Data East, Taito, Technosoft, Game Arts, Melbourne House, Ancient, Compile, Sunsoft, Technos, Secret Level, Sega Racing Studio, Psygnosis, Origin, Hudson, Core, Bullfrog and other companies to reform in their 80s and 90s forms and release a budget console that they release their games for exclusively and then port to these set top boxes and cellphones and whatnot.

It's strange... I find myself rooting for the Xbox One, but not in the way you might think. I'm not really happy about the one disk, one install process, and I really could do without the constant network connection being present, but I also do realize the potential the console has to change not just the way games are played, but how we interact with one another.

With the Xbox One, you truly have an all in one solution for families that allows for what was previously managed by multiple boxes and consoles to have a centralized hub where it's accessible by the entire family. Movies, social media, gaming, television - it's all right there and ready for you to access at a moments notice. While this isn't exactly what the core gamer wants (myself included), it's a nice step forward into the digital era, and can really change the way we view all content in our lives for years to come. I don't see this as a new gaming console as much as I see it as a new interactive way station to allow complete and instant communication to anyone, any time, anywhere across the world. Will I be buying one at launch? Probably not - like I said, I'm a gamer first and foremost - but I am intrigued by the tech behind the console, and what it can offer to the mass public.

I'm asking cause I just got rid of the facebook app in my Dune HD media player and I'm feeling somewhat old here!

is this a thing? sitting around the tv with your parents and facebooking? I thought kids were sneaky,
cause I have this cousin twice removed etc who was very eager to hide his MSN conversion when I came in to say Hi.

or do 20 something's sit in their apartment and facebook from the couch? you'd think the keyboard on their lap would prove annoying,
but I guess this is the generation that mastered those tiny phone buttons..

I don't know. I just have this sneaking feeling Xbox One is going to sell very well and that its Cloud service is going to executed better than Gaikai. I'm sure the mainstream won't give two craps about the DRM.

Something just tells me, Xbox One will have better marketing and will be better priced.
