Modchips and bootlegs have, and no doubt will continue, to be a thing on consoles as well. And Microsoft has no monopoly on console games either.
I just don't see the doom and gloom in the situation like some do. If MS decides to shut down all access to their system and shutter their doors with a big middle finger to all the gamers then you are in the same boat as you are if steam did the same thing.
You can either shrug your shoulders and accept all your stuff is gone, or you can mod/patch it and keep using it. Both systems are imperfect save that there is a general sense of good will towards steam as a corporate entity that people trust.
MS is a company that wants to make money, they rely on the consumers not actively hating them. I don't see them deciding to completely shaft all of their customers just because they have their money and, "fuck you we're evil hahaha".
They WANT to be in it for the long haul.. so sure, they will absolutely be trying to coddle people who give them big money (like the used game thing) but they are going to try and sugar coat it in ways the consumers can handle.
If something REALLY doesn't work, you can bet they will make a quick turn around to try and smooth things over... just like Sony did coming off the ps2 into the ps3.
Maybe this is Ms's turn to learn some harsh lessons and try and recover. Or maybe they will handle it pretty well from the get go. Will see as things unfold.
