that's 2.1 million sales in 24 hours in europe and north america. incredible figures, more so considering the demand is way more then what was sold at retail.

2.1 million units total, minus 1 million on the PS4's US launch day and not considering un-revealed sales since the North American launch, is 1.1 million in Europe, Australia, Latin America and all other regions on November 29th and 30th and possibly even December 1st. That is two or even three days for those interested in counting. Even that number is wrong though, because Sony's press release already stated that only 700,000 units sold in the new regions since the 29th, which means that 400,000 PS4s have sold in North America since November 15th.

    Totals:
    1.4 Million in North America
.7 Million in Europe, Australia and Latin America.
    -----------------------------------------------
2.1 Million PS4s sold worldwide as of December 1st

any sales figures are pretty much worthless until you can walk into any shop and buy either of the consoles of the shelf

Not useless, just not that worthwhile right now for sure.

It will show who had the demand + better supply chain through the important holiday season at the least... which will give a nice chunk of installed users to the victor going into the start of the new year.

We've had such a long spell between console generations this time I think there's a lot of pent up demand. The pricing is pretty reasonable compared to the last generation as well.

I'm mildly disappointed with the horsepower these machines are sporting. I was hoping we'd see the end of 30fps games, and everything being 1080p finally. Of course maybe that's a bit impractical even on a high end PC for another year or two depending on the scope of what your game is trying to do.

The software selection is pretty weak on both machines at the moment. I'll probably pick one up early 2015 when things have picked up. It depends on how much I'm missing out on that isn't on PC. It'll be interesting to see what impact Steambox has too.

I was hoping for them to be able to support 4k for media and games personally... even if the 4k res games would be 30FPS. But it seems both went for more "budget" oriented specs + other features above being power houses.

I can see why they did it, I just wish at least one had gone full ahead with a real monster of a machine.

4k is still a long way from being usable in games. there are no tv's for reasonable price who support it anyway

There actually are... they are just really crap.

It will be a few years before 4k tv's are like 1080p ones now.

I think it's a bit early to call that one. But it's absolutely undeniable that Sony pulled a full reversal from last gen's start. They are well poised to be the leading console. By how much? Who knows, but it's essentially their market to lose right now.

They just need to get games out there, keep themselves looking good, and watch for any move MS makes and be ready with an answer for it asap. MS will, hopefully, be right on their heels making their own moves to keep people interested in their box and looking to get more interested in it, and ready to take advantage of any misstep Sony makes.

The 360/PS3 era should be a good example to everyone that a fumbled start isn't always the end of the entire generation so long as the company is willing and able to adjust and really put up a serious fight.

The PS3 eventually caught up with the 360 because Japan will always go to Sony or Nintendo and will not reconsider their brand loyalty. Apparently Europe will tend toward Sony as well. I think the Xbone and PS4 will be close in sales in the US, but Japan and Europe will probably still be dominated by Sony. Either that or sales of both set-top-boxes will flounder and fail after Christmas.
