I though Ergheiz lost the 60 FPS from the arcade when released for the PS1.
RPG-wise alone the PS1 was outstanding. Games like FF7-9, FF Tactics, Threads of Fate, Arc the Lad Collection, Lunar 1 and 2 remakes, Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden 1 and 2, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Front Mission 3, Vandal Hearts, Vagrant Story, Star Ocean Second Story, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon Quest 7, and just keeps going on with titles. Most of my PS1 collection out of 70 games are RPGs. I would just look at my N64 and say WTF mayne???
Nope, but it had some other minor cuts: far background layer is static on the PS1 while animated on the arcade; lighting is a bit simplified on the PS1; arcade resolution was 640x480 while the PS1 version runs at 384x480...
But, for the most part, it's an amazing conversion given that the arcade board was quite more powerful IMO. The fact that the PS1 version was released in 1999 while the original game was from 1997 certainly helped to achieve such good results, since in 1999 the developers were pushing the PS1 to its limits.
Stuff like the 3D backgrounds at 5:33 or 7:21 are quite impressive if you consider that the game is running at 60 fps in a 1994 console hardware. I like how it has almost no warping, seaming or popup; common plagues in PS1 3D games.
Speed Punks looks awesome and plays awesome IMO. Pure fun.
I've read that this game took two years in development and, heck, it feels extremely polished in all areas.
What are you talking about Barone?! Speed Punks doesn't have Mario, Crash or Sonic in it and it came out after the glorious PS2 saw Japanese launch. It obviously doesn't count even though, unlike Mario Kart 64, it has 3D characters. Too little too late in my book.![]()

I just came into this thread to recommend Speed Punks! It is an impressive cart racer - like you said: polished.
This was one of those completely random finds. An ebay seller had some sealed PS1 games and I was looking through what they had listed and one stood out because I'd never seen or heard of it before. I did some brief research and found some high praise for Speed Punks, so I bought it. Brand new, $10 shipped back in 2009.
I'd completely grown tired of kart racing/battle games, but Speed Punks is perfectly fun to play. Great track design and it's especially nice to have an original game with original characters. I only wish I had 3 friends who'd be interested to try the 4-player races.
Speed Punks then led me to Smurf Racer and I wanted to give that a try - though I also purchased a sealed copy of that, and I've just not yet gotten to opening it :P
One of the best things about Playstation is that after years of actively collecting a library of games, it is completely likely you'll still stumble upon fun games you never even heard of.
^ thats a reason i like the ps 1 so much
there is always something new to be had same with the ps 2

Yeah, the variety of games is 2nd to none.
along the lines of random finds, here's another that I simply found while browsing a Japanese sellers inventory.
I knew about the Choro-Q car racing games, and was never a big fan. And because I'd acquired the Sony Analog Joystick (SCPH-1110) I started looking for compatible games and discovered Choro-Q Jet Rainbow Wings - which ended up being a surprisingly fun game. Then when I saw Choro-Q Boat for $5, I thought "what the heck? this might be neat!"
And it's fantastic! So oddly peculiar with the Choro style models of every type of boat imaginable. Racing as a cargo ship is a bit more frustrating than fun. There is some language barrier for the timed mission based section of the game (where you unlock more boats if I'm not mistaken.) And the graphics and load times can be a little detracting, but the quirkiness of the whole thing just makes it fantastic. And it has some nice music.
Regrettably I've got to say, this is one of the few games that I dug into hard, with some serious time, but I eventually got stuck and just gave up after replaying the same mission over and over again. Never got to this level:
And here's a the battle-racing section of the game:

Anyone ever played 40 Winks for the playstation? I got a copy in today. It's a pretty well made little game. I've only played a little of the first level, but it's got a really nice 3D engine. I'm kind of saddened that something so good was wasted on a game about a couple of kids in their pajamas beating up monsters with candle sticks, but that's life.![]()
i played it recently
i thought it was rather weak with a poor graphics engine and sluggish controls
not the psx's best

I thought the graphics engine was the best part, or maybe the textures. The gameplay was weak though. I also got a copy of Apocalypse in. I had the demo forever and thought it rocked. The full game rocks even more. I also got Granstream Saga (not bad, but not great either), and Death Trap Dungeon. I got DTD because I thought there was no way it was as bad as everyone claims it is. I was wrong. Robotron X also has better graphics than Robotron 64, but because of the way the camera moves a lot of the play field can be hidden if you're close to the top of the screen. Sad, it would have been perfect otherwise. They fixed this in the N64 game which has better gameplay as a result.
Now for an old favorite:
I just wish it didn't have those damn tank controls.![]()
thing i remember most from granstream saga were the extremley basic graphics ( no faces on the polygon models )
