Shit, I don't know where 8 bit Sonic should go. I also have a very difficult time comparing Sega to Nintendo, so this order changes depending on the weather. Sometimes Sonic 1 beats SMB2US, etc.
The sonic fan base is so bitchy that this isn't surprising.
That's because they like a few classic games from the 90s, and so far since 1997 have been given turd after turd after turd. You can't blame them for being agitated about the current direction of Sonic games when nearly all of them are absolute trash.
Also, I know we're all fanboys here but can we please admit that Sonic Unleashed is just as bad as Sonic 2006?

Hell no. I'm not going to defend the Werehog thing, which was ill-advised from the start, but I really had to force myself to play all the way through Sonic '06. The daytime stages in Unleashed, on the other hand, I revisited on multiple occasions while trying to collect more medals and unlock new achievements. I even bought most of the DLC packs for that game. That's at absolute worst maybe 50% enjoyment of the game versus the approximately 5-10% of '06 that I might consider comparing to a feeling that vaguely resembles what someone could possibly describe as "enjoyment".
Unleashed also gets credit for introducing a universally acclaimed style of gameplay that was used in two more instances to greater acclaim. There's no way I would compare that to '06 which was terrible in pretty much every achievable way and is likely the predominant reason for Sega's refusal to so much as hint at a possible Sonic Adventure 3.
I'm not saying all that is necessarily enough to claim that Unleashed is a good game on the whole, but it's nowhere near '06-bad. I actually played both games back-to-back when I got my 360 and the difference in quality blew me away.

Sonic Unleashed was fantastic. The daytime levels were a blast and the Werehog stuff really was no worse than the Knuckles stuff in Adventure and Adventure 2, in fact I'd rather play as the Werehog than Knuckles from Adventure.
Sonic 2006 had a lot of nice stuff going for it, it was just so rushed that it was a mess. The collision detection is too good so Sonic get's stuck on the most mundane things, there's little speed physics so Sonic can just walk upside down, and the speed up sections are clearly unfinished versions of what we would later get in Unleashed/Colors/Generations. Honestly I think if Sonic 2006 would have just been delayed a year to give it more polish it would have been a decent game. And even with it's broken gameplay, 2006 still had amazing music:
And again, a bad Sonic game is still a decent game, even Sonic 2006. Compared to a truly horrific game like say Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, Big Rigs, those awful NES bible games, most of the Jaguar's exclusive library, Virtual Hylide, etc. Sonic 2006 is a freaking masterpiece.
Also here's a fun tidbit. I've found that a lot of people out there who bash modern Sonic games have not actually played a single one. When I was in college and our club did Game Nights every week, I remember vividly popping Sonic Unleashed in and everyone having a blast playing it, and then not believing me when I told them it was Sonic Unleashed. A few weeks later I tried the same thing with Sonic 2006 and again people didn't believe it was Sonic 2006 as it wasn't as bad as they had heard it was.
The PS3 version of Unleashed had really bad framerate problems that made the Werehog levels pretty unplayable. Generations was fantastic. The Unleashed levels ported to the PC version of Generations were also fantastic. If I ever get a Wii U, I'll give Lost World a chance, maybe I'll rent it. It's kind of hard to take game journalists all that seriously.

Those are some good points. Also the games obviously keep selling or they wouldn't keep making them. I've always like Sonic Adventure 1. I bought a DC for it, but that doesn't change that it's also polarizing among people.

I found the Werehog levels to be unbelievably bad and straight up ruin the game tbh, was like a poor mans but nowhere near as good God of War. Terrible decision, the daytime levels I find had the same issues as Sonic Colors & Sonic Generations. They are too fast and you can just boost through everything.
Plus that whole boring hub world thing that really didn't need to exist and searching around for coins just to unlock more levels.

Unleashed was supposed to be Sonic Adventure 3 right? I made it through the entire game, though there were definitely some trying parts. I would give it a mid score personally, but I don't feel like my time was wasted.

No, it wasn't supposed to be Adventure 3. Sonic 2006 was essentially Adventure 3. It's pretty obvious from the style, gameplay, hubworlds, multiple playable characters, story, etc.
Oh, I see why I was confused, I remembered the Japanese name is Sonic World Adventure and extrapolated from there.
"It was originally intended to be the third installment of the Sonic Adventure series[43] and subsequently, at an early development stage, had the working title Sonic World Adventure, complete with work-in-progress logo. However, the development team began to introduce enough new innovations to separate it from the Sonic Adventure titles,[44] and so a new title, Sonic Unleashed, was decided upon.[45] It was then later revealed that the game's name in Japan would in fact remain Sonic World Adventure for its release there.[13]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_U...ed#Development

I actually agree with this. Sonic '06 was a god awful game, but that was mostly down to them rushing it out the door way too quickly. 9 months+ extra work could of done a world of wonders for it. It would of still been crappy in places ( some of the boss fights are awful -- the robot dog/hawk are terrible), but it would of been a might better game for it.
Also agree with you on the music - still give the soundtrack a listen every now and again, same great tunes in there.
