Great thing about Sonic 3&Knuckles (the whole, not the parts) is that one is given the option of playing each character individually, so you can totally ignore Tails if you so choose. That, and the gameplay for each character is quite a bit different enough to have a greater impact on how they traverse the levels.
Sonic 1 Genesis is better than Sonic 2 Genesis, though. The latter isn't a bad game, just not very good or great. Overrated along the same lines as Super Mario World is on SNES, though with less design flaws. Sonic CD is a friggin' abomination. Sonic 1 and 2 8-bit (SMS versions) are better than 2 Genesis and CD, IMO.
On topic:
There's no high rated/popular game that I dislike overall, just some that I feel aren't as good as folks believe. The aforementioned Sonic 2 Genesis and CD are two of them.
Rocket Knight Adventures would be another one. Seems to be ranked among the great action games, or platformers on Genesis, and I just don't agree. Good game, in spots very good, but nowhere near great or a masterpiece or anything. Some nice set pieces that add some wrinkles into the gameplay, like the lake stage with the reflections on the water, or the lava flow area, but other than that it's just a bit underwhelming overall. Graphically it's no real great shakes, and the same goes for the music which, for some odd reason (to me anyway) folks hold up as a great example of Genesis music.
While not overtly popular, two shmups that are "good but not great" are Fire Shark and Truxton. The latter has become more known due to the endless references on Classic Game Room, and the former seems to get quite a bit of love here, but I find them maybe mid-tier or upper mid-tier as far as Genesis shmups go.
Again, I do like these games...I just don't like them nearly as much as most other Genesis gamers seem to.
Totally agreed on the music, graphically it's not so much it being impressive as it is the uniqueness of the style (looks pretty neat IMO). Sparkster was very disappointing in that regard with generic sonic clone number 7 looks.
Gameplay wise though, I'd say you're being a bit harsh on it. Masterpiece it's not, but great it is for sure. Super fast paced with a lot of tricky platforming in later stages with more and better use of the rocket.
Sonic Spinball- A slow, sluggish, hit detection-lacking mess with graphics that aren't even as nice as Sonic 1, annoying music, and non-fun gameplay. Some people love this game to death, but I think it's a waste of plastic thanks it it's being not only a bad Sonic game, but a bad pinball game too.
Toejam & Earl- I don't know. Maybe I'm alone on this, but TJ&E just isn't all that great. Some decent tunes and graphics, but the gameplay never really appealed to me all that much. I've played worse, but the second game was more fun to me.
The two X-Men games- These games get so much praise, but they just felt... meh, when I played them. Like TJ&E, I've played far worse. But the music, the grainy graphics, the framey-as-hell animation, and the gameplay in the first one just didn't add up to much for me. And while the second improved over the first, it still didn't get me all excited, or get it into my "best Genesis games" category (though I do own it, thanks to a cheap, local flea market vendor).
Maybe it's just because I wasn't much of a fan of the comics, and so had no real love for the characters. But IMHO, the first game just felt like a sub-par licensed game, and the second wasn't the awe-demanding jewel that many make it out to be. Granted, the second one's better than the first, but...

You can choose to play as just Sonic or just Tails in Sonic 2 as well in the options screen so that's not really a problem in my opinion. But I agree that S3&K did do it better by giving you the ability to control Tails' flight and give Knuckles gliding and wall climbing. In Sonic 2, Tails was nothing more than a sprite swap.
For me Sonic 1 is the tightest platforming experience of the three (counting S&K as part of 3 here). It's not my personal favorite but I get why it is for some people and I always felt it was the most solid from a design standpoint. Sonic 2 and 3 made the adventure feel more epic though. I think a lot of what I like about them is their climactic build ups to the final level. Sonic 1 and Sonic CD sort of left me feeling unfulfilled in that regard (though I admit the Metal Sonic race stands out for me in CD).
I'm one of the people who consider Rocket Knight an action-platformer masterpiece so I'll just respect your opinion and move on with that one. :P
For Truxton and Fire Shark I totally get why they're not everyone's cup-of-tea. They're a very no-frills, but solid, experience.

Regarding Fire Shark and truxton:
I really love Fire Shark. I played that Thing to Death as a kid.
A few years ago I found out about Truxton, same developer, same style. Kinda like Fire Shark in space... I got it for a few Bucks, looking forward to a mindnumbing evening full of shmup Glory.
After 10 Minutes I swapped in Fire Shark and played Truxton only a few times again, since then.
What I am trying to say with that: I think the good old Nostalgia plays a huge part in what and why we love some games more then the other.
I am a total Sonic 3 & Knuckles Nut, liking all classic Sonics, but that thing is being played the most. Like when I was a kid, it never let me down. From release Date on it was the perfect Sonic Game for me. Same for the Sonic 2 Lovers: I bet thats where it all started for them. Kind of an Key-gaming Experience![]()
Sonic 1 was good except for the fact that you couldn't do the spin dash. I hated getting stuck at the bottom of a steep incline and have to go waaay back to get a running start so that I could clear it. Sonic 2 has better music to me (Emerald Hill and Chemical Plant Zones are the shiznit!). I never really played 3 or S&K that much as a kid but I have them now and they are pretty solid. Any of them beat a Mario game any day. Mario sucks a big ole bag of donkey balls.
Haha, BAM! Roll Tide?
NBA Live series. Those are the absolute worst!
Phantasy Star II is pretty bad but that's mainly due to it not aging well I think
Kind of surprised that no one has had a bad thing to say yet of Road Rash
Alien Soldier and Ghouls N Ghosts, both for the same reason: controls. I find both games really awkward to control. In GNG, the jumping is atrocious and you can't turn around while ducking (wtf?). In Alien Soldier, maybe I just suck at it but I could never get it down to where I didn't feel like I was spazzing out all over the place. Also I don't like the way you change weapons.
I think Mortal Kombat is a crappy fighter that only sold because of gore. I guess I like the characters too, but the actual gameplay is shite.
Virtua Racing feels clinical and boring to me.
I like Aladdin overall, but I don't get why people like the music. To me it's the perfect example of a poor, lowest-common-denominator type of music conversion on the Genesis. The melodies are intact but they have such an annoying sound to them.
Maybe it's the conversion but I feel like I can't see where I'm going in Test Drive 2.
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.
Yeah, kinda wish I hadn't read through this thread. Hyberbole overload.
