That's available in Windows 7 and Vista too.

One awesome thing about the new Windows 8 explorer is that you can now change the "show extensions" and "show hidden files" settings right from it.

So, performance-wise, how better is Windows 8 to 7? I'm on the fence about upgrading, I don't know if I could live with Metro, but I sure wouldn't mind giving it a try if it meant my system ran better.

8 and 7 are virtually Identical for general performance. The only really noticeable area I personally experience is the boot and shutdown times. Other than that there's little to no difference. 8's code is more clean, so the overhead is lower.

If you have 7, you're better off keeping it and waiting for Windows 9 or whatever. Vista? 8 is a good upgrade at least from a performance standpoint. XP? Well, if you didn't upgrade to 7 for whatever reason, I highly doubt you'll find 8 any more appealing.

Edit: Requirements for 8 are slightly higher than 7, my mistake. But the code is still quite clean.

What I feared. Thanks man. I'll stick with 7 then, my machine boots up in like 45 secs anyway, which is fast enough for me. Again, thank you.

Occutell pretty much said it all. I've noticed some minor compatibility issues in 8, and 1 or 2 programs ran better, but really really minor things. Boot and Shutdown you'll notice, but, even then, it's not *that* much.
The really nice improvements are the better multi-monitor support (finally, jesus). The better explorer (has the shitty ribbon, but in a way, that's a good thing, more options available, including an up button!!!! again, finally). The better task manager (it's no process explorer, but it's good).

The theme is preference really. Aero was too much, this is too little.

The cons I've already said most of them (big list if you don't like having your screen covered with a mobile phone interface), but none of them is major, besides the Windows Security Essentials and Windows Update problems.
You can always just get 8 and put in StartIsBack plus a few other patches, that gives you all the advantages without any of the cons (besides the two serious ones).

Win8 runs several times slower on my laptop than vista and 7 which run at pretty much identical speeds. 2006 hardware, 2GB RAM...

Nothing's perfect, but the general expectation is that 8 should be a lot nicer to older PC's than 7 was. Though 7 is still a better system by far for most people.

My laptop is also 2006 and runs 8 like a champ.

Should run alright on the processor. I have a spare "Pentium" laptop running windows 7. It's no better than a Core 2 Duo. The Ram will be the problem for you if you're going with the 64bit OS. 32bit will be hit or miss on performance, I don't know how big the footprint will be when it's running.

Does it function exactly like 7 if I did that? I mean proper start menu + and everything where it should be, no leftovers of Metro popping up now and again.

It going to chug once in a while, but in general it should be fine.

Vista 32-bit runs ok (not great, or even good, but ok) on 1GB of RAM (work computers). Win 7 has some cleaner code compared to Vista, and you have more RAM, so you should be ok (Should be).
