Thanks for showing the NTSC only screen. I've never seen that as the two mega drive games I have, Castle of Illusion and Space Harrier II have no region lockout on them. They both work in my Genesis just fine

Is Zero Wing PAL version region-locked? Because I would love to get that game for my Genesis.

No it's not I just checked, very few of the early PAL Mega Drive games were region locked, that only started a few years after the system was around.

It's region locked, also japanese games are the wrong shape and won't fit in a US console anyway so you'd have to widen the cartridge slot to play any game (which would be classed as modding, to a minor extent)

Yeah I guess so, personally I love modding consoles and hate mucking about with add-ons that I don't need so it never really occured to me.

I'd mod mine but I have no experience w/ Soldering, so I'd rather pay someone w/ experience to do it. its not a priority since I already have a game genie and Jap MD1

my game genie doesn't really work and is too finicky, its more convenient to have the slot wider.

Has anyone come across a list of games which are region free (or compiled one on this site)?

A couple exist here and there, but there's nothing of any authority out there. The best rule of thumb is that a game released after Sonic 2 is likely to be region-locked (either through checking the video output, the console's internal region, or both), unless it's an EA game (with the yellow tab on the cartridge).

(If you conduct your own experiments, it's helpful to add a sentence to Wikipedia (if the game has a page!) with your results.)

Thanks for passing on the rule of thumb. I do have a converter that works with the only Japanese game I own, but appreciate the ability to just pop my game in.

according to that list its not.

If someone could do me a favor and check Alex kidd in an emulator, I would appreciate it. I don't get why its not working, It was made in '88, long before the lock out was introduced.

I used to have DBZ and it was not locked out. Wish I hadn't sold it, as it's a pretty good and original fighting game.
