I recently consolidated my entire Dragon Ball collection to a very large DVD binder to save space). I have a very small room and house.

I just need to get around to getting some flashcarts. I only really collect for Game Boy because the system holds a very special place in my heart, and not many games are too expensive for it right now. I am getting a GB flashcart at some point though for the odd expensive titles. I also buy PSX games because prices for most of those games aren't too bad yet either, and I don't have any other means to emulate them on a console (the Wii emulator is terribly slow still).

Right now, for 2600 - SNES and Genesis (and some N64 games), my two hacked Wiis are very serviceable, and in some cases, preferable, like the ability to play Star Fox 2 on a TV with a controller for dirt cheap, rather than paying $100 for a repro. I used to have a problem of losing interest and not sticking with my games due to having so many at my disposal, but I've managed to break away from that, and now I am able to commit myself to a few games at a time.

I will probably still get a handful more NES-SNES and Genesis games, but only the ones I had as a kid for the nostalgia factor.
For the gameboy I wanted to play trip world, but didn't want to pay 80+$ for it. So I built myself a gb devcart with stuff I had laying around. Also with a flashcart you can play romhacks that were never made into a real cart. I was travelling around the city yesterday for some college stuff. I tell you, travelling around on the subway playing the original mario land in full colour as a real gameboy color game rules.

As for the wii emulators, I don't count these it's not the same experience. Emulation is great if you're kinda broke, but definitely not a proper substitute. However for a flashcart that plays 100% the same as the real cart on the real hardware, that is a proper substitute.

All of my physical collections have been migrating to single pieces of electronic storage over the years. I still have my dvd collection circa the year 2000-2006/7, but now the majority of my movies sit on my 2tb internal sata drive in a computer with a video card that has s-video output. I do still enjoy collecting real console cartridges, but the prices slowly rising and rising turned me more into the direction of supporting flashcarts and well made repro jobs.

I collect games 'cause I like 'em. Same reason I collect books, comics, toys movies and whatever else.

    x2

Collecting, however, does go through phases.
I quit collecting comic books for a while, getting back to them later on.
Right now I completely stopped buying movies (DVD/BD), blame Netflix. Unless, of course, Galaxy of Terror gets released in R4.
My game collecting is pretty much done, new additions are sparse and I'm sure they will never mount to anything over 10 games/year.

Except for DVD/BD, I don't see myself getting rid of my items any time soon!

I have a few problems with that video.

    1. They're really over thinking this. MOST people collect things because they enjoy them for one reason or another. It's that simple. People hoard because they have a disorder and have taken it too far.

    2. There's a difference between collecting and hoarding. Collecting is organized, hoarding is not. Hoarders allow it to control their lives while collectors don't. My games and systems have their place and it's not anywhere near where I work. I don't have them cluttered up everywhere.

    3. I like complete, physical copies because you don't own digital copies. They can be taken away from you at any time. I can play a physical copy when, where, and how I want. It has nothing to do with being able to hold it or look at it. I certainly don't collect to look at my games. I actually think it's silly to collect something you don't use for it's intended purpose. They aren't art, they games. I'm a gamer first and a collector second.

Yeah, I definitely intend on getting flashcarts to replace the Wii emulators, though they do have some upsides like being able to play lightgun games on LCD screens.

Is the wii better than the original Xbox for running emulators? Ive read a thread from about a year ago and most people said that original Xbox was still better. But maybe that has changed.

That lightgun thing is cool I never thought about that.

I think 2600 to 16-bit is about on par (and better in regards to Lightgun and Mouse type games), but MAME, N64, and PS1 still suck, but at least N64 is improving.

I had tried to believe that my interest in collecting Sega Genesis games happened rather spontaneously - it's actually difficult for me to recognize that I've assembled anything that could be considered a collection as I was originally just aiming to amass a few games from yesteryear that I knew I enjoyed or didn't get a chance to play; Of course things are never quite that simple and I've acquired more games than I had intended - better yet, knew about.

In either case I found the video began to touch upon one sentiment I valued: I wanted something, in this instance a collection, to bridge me to my childhood. I think it's important to have things which reminds us of our childhood because they evoke certain emotions and memories of cherished moments or people, and having something tangible that resonates those feelings is almost like holding some sort of evidence.

I'd like to think most my age smile when they see the hang-tabs on a clamshell case and think how great it was to go through the aisles at a Toys R' Us or having to blow on a cart to get a game running just right. Consequently, if a game or a collection fails to do this, it's no longer or never was worth owning. In the end the most difficult part of owning any collection is accepting that some day I'll have to part with it.

... or do as my brother plans to at old age and set everything he owns on fire.

If you ever do that to your genesis collection, I hope you realize you would go strait to hell, right?

Why do I collect....ohhhhh because I want to. Sure I don't have a whole lot of free time to play everything, but hey if I ever win the lottery I'll have a ton of free time.

To clarify, the thread is titled after said video. The question is rhetorical.

Obviously we all enjoy doing it / have the desire to do it.

In my case it's just nostalgia of my childhood. I'm trying to rebuild my good old megadrive library!

Seriously I stopped collecting carts a while ago and started putting my focus on cool flash devices.
