New Android-powered console revealed by peripheral maker Mad Catz

Peripheral maker MadCatz is getting in on the Android-based console trend and has announced the Mojo.

The Mojo is a miniature Android console that features a unique controller, as well as supporting the Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and Nvidia TegraZone marketplaces.

The console features 1080p streaming capabilities, “no less than 16GB internal storage”, and a MicroSD expansion slot.

The Mojo is a “standard” Android device, allowing you to play previously purchased Android game, but no touchscreen games will work.

This is different to the Ouya console, which features Android games optimised for the system.

“We’re going down a very different road to the competition and believe in being open, honest and fair with the consumer,” said Mad Catz’ Alex Verrey.

“We’re not offering a walled garden with a small selection of a hundred or so games. We’re not forcing gamers to use our controllers if they don’t wish to, we’re not trying to sell services or software, nor are we forcing the gamers into a walled garden. Our commitment to the gamer is simple: We’re going to deliver the most powerful Android based Micro Console on the market when we launch later this year.”

While it does come bundled with its own controller, named the CTRLR, the Mojo can be paired with other Bluetooth controllers as well as PC mice and keyboards.

The Mojo is set to launch within the holiday period of 2013.

Almost stopped reading at android, but at least the controller isn't a mess like the Ouya's; The d-pad at least looks usable, but to name it "CTRLR" is a little silly...

what does that mean..PlayStore access? i doubt they mean to take you current game apps back them up to .apk and install on console via USB..right?

what does that mean..PlayStore access? i doubt they mean to take you current game apps back them up to .apk and install on console via USB..right?

It means that virtually NO games will run on it as most Android games require a touch screen. That's why Ouya put a touchpad on their controller - so you can play virtually any Android game, PERIOD.

I'll never forget the time many years ago where my MadCatz Gamecube controller caused the system to reset randomly. I thought it was the system until I had it unplugged one day and it never reset again. I plugged it back in, and the resets came back.

Still makes no sense to me. Then again, I don't know much about electronics.
