Freedom Planet appeals to nostalgia and furry tendencies . I totally disagree on your first point. Braid, Bastion and Super Meat Boy are most definitely not retro. They're just 2D games. Same goes for closer to triple A titles like Rayman Origins.

Retro to me is mimicking (poorly) the hardware limitations of old platforms for no reason other than appealing to nostalgia. If you're specifically making a tribute to an old game, fine, but don't give me the "pixel-art is easier" excuse. It's not, anything above NES level is harder to do in pixel art than regular art.

So what about games that mimick the hardware limitations pretty much spot on then?
Stuff like MM9 and 10 that only break the restrictions in some respects.
I'm guessing that would still qualify as retro as it's a obvious nod to the glory days of said series.

One of the few times I gripe with the whole "retro" as a artstyle is when people keep mixing resolutions.
A low resolution pixelated character with some higher resolution details on it just grinds my gears.

    Those are the worst ones.

I'd agree but Pier Solar HD seems to do it very well.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.
