That is composite to RGB comparison not Component to RGB. My question was the signal degradation from taking SCART RGB to component vs using SCART.

There's a little bit but it's not too noticeable. However, SCART to component converters tend to mess with the tint a little which isn't a problem with pure RGB.

Sure, those are easy to come by. I have never seen one available where I live. Besides, I doubt that they are any bigger than 20" and that is too small for me.

There's a few big ones, including some that are 29":

Isn't that what the tint adjustment on the TV is for?

With RGB you shouldn't even have to adjust tint.

In fact, some TVs (European SCARTs) take RGB differently. For instance, I have 5 CRTs 4 of them I can adjust saturation normally, by I have a 14" CRT that when using RGB it bypasses the colour circuitry completly. I can adjust the saturation to minimum and it stays the same, fortunately, the colour saturation when using RGB on that TV is just perfect!!!

That would also mess with the tint for other devices. It'd be kinda annoying to adjust the tint every time you use a SCART to component converter, don't you think?

Usually the problem is not the actual price of the monitor but a) finding one, which works with no issues b) finding one locally since postage and packing costs more often then not exceed the price of the actual monitor.

No joke. Right now the nearest 13 inch Sony brand PVM on ebay is about 100 miles, over 650 miles for 20 inches.

If you are based in the US then Craig's List seems a good place to score a PVM / BVM - some good deals to be had there if one gets lucky.
I am currently awaiting for delivery of a Sony BVM 14M4DE I got from ebay - the intra-EU shipping costs worked out slightly more than the price I paid for the monitor but I couldn't really find anything interesting locally. Fingers crossed it will work without any issues.

Yeah, Craigslist is a good place to search for them, that's where I found mine. Another person has mentioned that searching ebay by postal code radius is a decent method as well.

You just need to be persistent though really. I was probably searching for a solid 9 months to a year before I finally found one in nice shape, non gouge price, and close enough to me. But, after getting it home and hooking up some stuff to it to test it out, it was totally worth the wait and the cash.

I found one in Santa Monica on CL last night for $100 OBO. It's a PVM-20N6U. The guy says he is the sole owner and bought it in 2001 for studio use. Should I jump on this? I don't know anything about these monitors other that what I've seen on the forums here. What questions should I ask?

Its most likely a US version of the below (the last letter usually denotes region - U = USA, E = Europe, A = Australia]:

Seems a pretty simple model in terms of buttons / functions and number of lines (500) is rather small considering 20" display size. That said I think its got all you need: RGB input, an on screen menu for screen allignment etc. also chances are its one of the newer models - the above extract comes from a Sony brochure printed in Feb 2000.
