So, there's a japanese version of PS for the Mega Drive. Are there any differences between this and the SMS version or is it just a straight port?

As far as I know it isn't even a port, it is the Master System ROM in a Genesis cartridge that uses backward compatibility.
"... If Sony reduced the price of the Playstation, Sega would have to follow suit in order to stay competitive, .... would then translate into huge losses for the company." p170 Revolutionaries at Sony.
"We ... put Sega out of the hardware business ..." Peter Dille senior vice president of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment
"Sega tried to have similarly strict licensing agreements as Nintendo...The only reason it didn't take off was because EA..." TrekkiesUnite
That's an interesting idea... I wonder if there was a converter in the cart like the old NES carts that used the JP ROM. It would look neat to have PS I-IV in fancy Genesis cases.
I think they removed the FM soundtrack. I'm not sure.

And I confirm there's no FM music
Unfortunately the YM chip inside the Genesis is not compatible with SMS's

Pretty sure the FM code is still intact.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.
Then we set about developing killer games.

If someone can extract the Rom and throw it on a Neomyth that would confirm if the FM code is there or not. I'm pretty sure the only reason it doesn't play is because the Genesis nor the game cart have a YM2413 in them.
Even if it was still there, what use of it?
Such a disappointment.

I really don't get why they didn't release this in the West.

I think TmEE put a SMS FM chip in his Mega Drive, perhaps he can test it.
