I too enjoy Zelda II quite a bit. Got all the way to right before the final palace (That corridor leading to it) on my 3DS but the game is damn difficult. Really fun though.
And I'm right there with you GoGoGadget. SMB2J is just not a whole lot of fun. Though I think it plays a little better on Super Mario All-Stars.
Wow.... Just wow. lol. Nintendo is releasing more fun Mario and Zelda titles? Fuck them! Those games are crap because...... Mario?
I love SMB2USA. I also love SMB2J. I love that SMB2USA is so different and unique with tons of character. I love that SMB2J is a manic insane platforming challenge. That game alone is enough reason to buy SM Allstars. Liking one doesn't mean you have to hate the other though. Like boobies painted different colors, I can still love them both.
Why all the hate Sega-16? Why?
In truth, what came first in development SMB2USA or SMB2J?
SMB2J came out in 1986, SMB2USA came out in 1988
I think by 1986 Nintendo had to rethink SMB2 for the US Market, The Japanese version was deemed to hard and look like SMBSuper Mario Bros. 2 initially started out as a demo for a vertically scrolling, two-player, cooperative-action game that was scrapped.[4] The reasons included the technical limitations of the NES hardware making it difficult to produce a polished game featuring a vertical orientation and multiplayer features conceived for the project. It was decided to add more Mario-like elements, such as horizontal levels (though many vertically oriented levels were retained in the final project). Since the game had gone through some development, Nintendo created the game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic for the Family Computer Disk System during its agreement with the Fuji Television company. The game was changed in order to fit with the theme of the mascots of the company and their adventure.

Perhaps, or perhaps fans of Zelda 1 are general fans of that sort of adventure game, and not so much the side scrolling action-adventure/action-RPG style. (likewise, fans of the Monster World series probably like Zelda II . . . and fans for both probably like both. . . Metroid and Zillion might fall into this somewhere too)
Personally I like the top-down 2D adventure game formula a lot more, both in pacing and general game mechanics. (and aesthetics) Albeit I think I prefer the Monster World formula to Zelda II in general.
As far as 3D Zelda . . . the general formula of OOT is a good standard to build on, at least in terms of combat and gameplay mechanics and such. And as far as that goes, all of the 3D Zeldas have followed that within reason. (my complaints about Twilight Princess gameplay is more about the Wii controls than anything . . . that's aside from story, level design, art, etc that people have about various games)
I personally liked Wind Waker and Majora's Mask a lot, more than OOT in many respects, despite the differences in overall game design and fomula, and art style of Wind Waker.
I've always really liked SMB2U, but SMB2J... man is that a hard game... and very unoriginal, too. So yeah, I like the US one better.
I am fairly certain that every modern controller has lag, and Super Mario All Stars does too, so it is just a matter of how much the game plays itself for you.![]()

There was Link's Awakening on the Game Boy, and then Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons on the GBC.
