Well without doing the character designs for Super Mario 2 USA we can be pretty sure that the designs for Super Mario Bros. 3 and World would be radically different. Miyamoto had to update the Mario characters to match the characters he had designed for the rather advanced Doki Doki Panic engine and it's what eventually led to the design for Super Mario Bros 3 as we know it.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

Well I mean I got all the way to the final dungeon without too much problem, those enemies and platforms at the end are just a bitch. I'll have to go back and re-visit it soon, hopefully finish the game.

The only bummer is that the final boss is the easiest boss in the game.

Damn you, AVGN, for ruining that battle for me.

Nah, the last Boss in BK3/SOR3 is the easiest final boss. I stand in one spot and jump kick him till he's dead.

    Stands up.

Both are really good in my opinion.
And thank god it happened this way.
I just can't imagine Super Mario Rpg without those Sniffits.

The Mario version of Doki Doki Panic was re-released in Japan as well and honestly Mario 2 is the better version of the game thanks in part to the added B-Dash.

So much of the game like tall-and-skinny Luigi and the enemies has been folded into Super Mario canon so it's really silly these days when anybody doesn't like the USA Super Mario 2 because of the Doki Doki conspiracy. Mario as it exists today has been shaped a lot by this little side-quest.

SMB2 Japan reminds me of similar Japanese game half-sequels like Lode Runner Championship and other early Famicom follow-ups where the mindset was to just offer more and harder challenges for the same game. It's more of a pro-edition of the first game than a true "part 2."

They felt strongly that American gamers wanted a true sequel and not Super Mario hard mode and they were probably right, even if it's funny that the "true" sequel started life as an entirely different game. It's a great game, one of my childhood favorites, and I'm glad we got it.

Super Mario Bros 2 US gave indeed gave us a lot of interesting characters, and without this game we would not have gotten the (imo) amazing cartoon.

I just wish Nintendo would use more SMB2U characters in their Mario games, always this Bowser this Bowser that stuff is getting boring,
give us a game where Wart comes back, a game where Wart teams up with Bowser, a game where Mouser rules an island or something,
just something other then Bowser did something naughty.

I did like the "Super Mario Land" games, those actually took risks. Yeah "Six Golden Coins" was more Mario World, but the first included different enemies and the Superball.

Both games also had memorable level music (more so the first), and Space Zone 2.....I love that music as much as any SOR song.

Even out of the stuff Mario Land 2 borrows from World it's still got a lot of unique elements to it and both Land games gave us new levels, enemies and bosses, one of which being Wario.

Hell, SML2 didn't even have a princess to save.

Compare these to the New Super Mario Bros. series which seem content to retread the old console titles with a few new power ups here and there. I don't know why they're so afraid to go off script and experiment when it's worked out fine in the past.

I think the experimental side of Nintendo died with the Virtual Boy. After that tanked, they played it safe.

Gunpei Yokei might not have always have been inventive, but when he was he failed miserably.

That is a stupid thing to say. The Game Boy was anything but a failure in design.

Gunpei Yokei designed the Game Boy, hardly a failure

Gunpei Yokoi developed the Game & Watch handhelds. Those weren't a failure either. He was one of Nintendo's greatest designers. Virtual Boy was a rushed product and it shows. It wasn't strictly Gunpei Yokoi's fault at all.

Had the Virtual Boy been taken a bit better, a Virtual Boy Color by 1999 could have been possible.

The Virtual Boy was not portable, and it would have been out-done by better 3D technology. It also comes off gimmicky and a half assed idea.

Gunpei Yokei should be remembered for doing jawusum portable systems, not the Virtual Boy.
