Use a multimeter to check output voltage from your power adapter. It needs to be putting out 9v DC. Maybe it has gone bad. Also, is the wall outlet a good one, or maybe a circuit breaker has flipped off in your main electrical panel? Finally, is this the correct power adapter for your Genesis console? Models I and II use different voltages, polarities and connector sizes. Wrong polarity may have cooked your console.

Sorry to quote this old reply, but I must. S-video is more similar to Composite that those two compared to RPG SCART. I would not switch from composite to s-video. You will not get any better picture quality for the money spend. Only to buy RGB cord is the best value for the money. Plus s-video plug is worst plug ever made. S-video plug can work for day or 2, then it losens, and youll get black and white screen. Then you need to tighten the connection again to get the colors. In Finland, I dont tell to anyone to have s-video cord because it's plug is the shittiest ever made, picuter quality is almoust the same as composite so no picture quality value for the money. I would use only RGB/YUV and DVI/HDMI for greatest connection and Picture quality value.
People who has rf only tv, I would suggest to buy cheap tv with scart plug and plug multi scart box into that and add their best consoles into that multi scart box to enjoy RGB picture quality with every older console.
S-video from MD is night and day compared to its composhit.... colors are much better, there's also much less blurring and much less color subcarrier artifacts. If I would live in USA, and have no TV with YUV input, I would most definitely use S-video.
And regarding the connector problem, just don't buy cheap ones... I have learned quite sometime ago that buying cheap connectors is just waste of money, particularly really cheap RCA and TRS connectors, those break up after mild use.
...and Zebbe knows all about SCART, he uses only that :P

Is it possible to purchase replacement pins for model 1s and model 2s? If so, from where?
The Genesis consoles that come with red button controllers- are these the earliest ones or later ones or what? I've always wondered.
Hello All,
I'm just getting back into gaming and I'm having a problem that is driving me nuts.
I picked up used 32" Standard Definition CRT TV that seems to be in excellent shape. It is a Sony Wega FD Trinitron KV-32FS16.
When I connect my Saturn or Dreamcast via Composite everything is fine (S-Video cables are on order).
When I connect the Genesis Model 1, it displays no color just a black and white image (I have disconnected all traces of the Sega CD and 32X to reduce complexity).
This is true whether I'm using a Model 2 Mono AV Cable (with Model 1 adaptor), a Model 2 RF Box (with M1 adaptor), or the old school RF connection (actually a Nintendo branded box).
It doesn't matter which composite input I use (all have been verified okay by the other systems.) When using RF, it doesn't matter if its channel 3 or 4.
If I plug the Genesis into an older Dell Flat Panel Monitor with a composite input, the color works just fine and it worked just fine on an older TV in another era.
HOWEVER, I have discovered that I can get color from the Genesis on the the Sony TV if I kind of wiggle (connect and disconnect) the video connector. If I can get a flash of color in the scrabbled image and then force the connector in quickly, the color seems to "catch". However, the second I change inputs or turn the system on and off, the color is lost. This wiggle procedure is tricky and can take a few minutes. If I just plug everything in normally, I get no color.
Any ideas? I've spend many hours Googling and searching forums and have found just about nothing.
I found this one thread but his solutions don't work for me:

I'm not interested with the S-Video mod right now as I would like to put the 32X back in the mix at some point.
It seems like my only other option is the SCART RGB to YUV Component Video Transcoder route but I'm not sure how wifey will feel about me dropping $50-$100 to connect a 20 year old game system.

If you wiggle the connector and get color, the connector is bad. Could be just a cold solder joint - try resoldering the connector. If it still doesn't work, you probably have bad metal fatigue in the connector - replace it.
... but it works fine on another display (with no sensitivity as you might see with a bad connector) and shows as black and white either through the AV port or the RF port. Also, I have been "wiggling" the connection between the M1 to M2 adaptor and the M2 cable to get it to catch (not actually the port on the Genesis). It seems like there is a lower level issue between the TV and the Genesis.
It could be your tv. I have a 32" Sony Bravia HDTV and it also displays black/white with my Genesis connected through s-video, but works fine on my 19" Vizio HDTV through s-video.
It's the same deal with my Dreamcast with s-video. For some reason my Sony tv doesn't like old Sega systems with s-video (except for Saturn).
If you wiggle a connector, that connector or the jack you're plugging into it is going bad. If it's not on the board doesn't make any difference. Something is loose and about the go completely bad. Good connectors/jacks don't affect the signal no matter how much you wiggle them. That's the point of a good connection.![]()
My Model 2 Sega CD doesn't boot up properly. When I put a game in, it boots up, and when you get to the PRESS START screen, it acts like a blank CD for every game I put in. Why is this?
I'm wondering if the electromagnetic plates for the 32X are absolutely needed with the model 1, or can you use the console without them? I used a model 2 without them (don't believe it needed them anyways).
I never noticed any difference using it with or without the plates. I could never get the plates to fit in a model 2 Genesis anyways (or was it only designed for the model 1?).
