Voted for the NES version of the original. No tough-ass difficulty (Super C, US Hard Corps) and no stupid gimmicks (top-down levels from Contra 3. Thank god they removed them from the GBA port)

Huzzah!! The first Super C vote is mine!!

    #2 = Shattered Soldier
    #3 = Contra Force
#4//5 = tie twixt Neo Contra and Contra III
#6 = Contra NES. Despite its inexcusable tech flaws it holds a certain fascination and the sidescrolling lvs look very good.
    #7 = Contra 4 on DS.
#8 = Operation C. I don't know about on the original hardware but with a real controller through emulation it's not too bad.
#9//10//11 = The Contra Adventure, Legacy of War, and Hard Corps bring up the rear together.

Having beaten Super C since my first post, I'd rank it right behind C:HC now. Still haven't played Uprising...

I'm torn between NES Contra and Super C! I love both of them equally, like Doom and Doom 2.

Im not a great snes fan and there are very few games for the snes that I enjoy, let alone action games, with that said, Contra 3 is one of that games. So my vote goes for contra 3 the alien wars.

As I said in a past old topic my relationship with hardcorps is something like "love-hate". Why? Hardcorps has amazing gameplay/programming, but horrible colors and art. In this sense look almost like a nes game. And I dont forgive Konami for this.
Hardcorps had the potential for be the definitive 16 bit contra game for the definitive machine but unfortunately fall short in this areas.

Contra 3 looks like more balanced in design with great art, music and action ( even when gameplaywise is not so amazing than contra hardcorps).

I was deciding between Super C and Contra HC... I chose Super C, it needs more love. I can beat the game no hits from beginning to end, like the first game. Got to learn to do that with arcade games too... stupid sideways display and clunky jumps don't help...

Deciding between Contra and Super C, had to go with the original.

Hard Corps by far, for all the reasons already listed. Followed by Neo Contra for PS2, because that one is just insane, it clearly doesn't take itself too seriously and it reminds me a lot of the Metal Slug games.

I'd have picked Contra III as my second favourite, but those top-down levels are boring as all hell. I don't care if they're a technical achievement in hardware usage or whatnot, they are boring to play. So, Alien Wars loses a few points for that, the sidescroller levels are cool though.

I had to vote Hard Corps. It's my #2 Genesis game after Revenge of Shinobi. It gets everything right. There's nothing else like being able to blow through the game on a boring afternoon. It gives a sense of accomplishment. I've never played Contra 3, but it looks so boring in comparison, but since it's on the SNES it gets the benefit of the doubt while HC is brushed aside.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

Definately the first one, Hard Corps is really good, Super C gets no attention for how good it is and Contra III has a bunch of boring top-down levels that piss me off, but the side-scrolling bits are fine.

Honorable mention for Shattered Soldier, excellent game for the PS2.

Lol. To be fair, I've only ever played the first Contra on the NES, but for some reason, it never struck a chord with me, which is strange, because I love "Run N Guns", just not Contra. I don't think I'll ever figure out why I don't find it fun.
