Nintendo could talk all day long about their controlling bullshit, but "Micro Machines" was a damn awesome unlicensed game.
The there is the fact that game was released without the "Seal of Quality" and garbage like "Total Recall" was.
I hear you brotha! Sega became virtual Nazis by pulling that BS. That's why I own the Japanese Version. I don't even own the busted SOA version. There is actually an English patch that I use with a Japanese ROM on my Mega Everdrive. The best way to play period.
Sega probably used it's clueless marketing department to make all those senseless edits.

One of the best Codemasters games on the NES IMO . . . music, graphics, gameplay, all awesome. (didn't go overboard on the arps like most codemasters music did too)
Definitely the best of the Quattro Adventure games.
Actually, if you look at all of Codemaster's releases, they fare pretty well with the overall quality range of officially licensed NES games too . . . I'd go so far as to say their worst is still a good deal better than the worse licensed NES crap.(same for Tengen's unlicended stuff) Actually the "bad" part of most Codemasters games was more the difficulty (albeit more typical of Euro computer games) combined with 1 hit deaths, lack of continues . . . or sometimes a lack of lives entirely (and lack of save points). All other 3 games in Quattro Adventure suffer from all of that horribly, and Super Robin Hood is still pretty tough at times, and has no continues. (Treasure Island Dizzy is the worst offender there . . . cheap 1-hit deaths, no save points, no continues)
OTOH, go over to Color dreams, and their average is about on par with the crap-teir licensed NES stuff . . . and ugh, then think of the WORST of those games . . .
I have SOR 3 because I got loved the series and got it for my b-day/x-mas when it was released. I got a cart only BK3 in 2003/4, and really only play that. Overall better game, untainted by editing and difficulty tampering.
No matter the difficulty, that last boss is a push-over.
