Default OutRun2 Scud Race challenge course VS arcade Scud Race emulated

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Gsviv_Hy0

A head-to-head comparison of Outrun 2's 1st bonus level (or was it the second - I can't remember), a single long course made up from the 4 courses from Scud Race, and the actual levels themselves being emulated on Supermodel (WIP 0.3 rev 270) Model 3 emulator. The bonus course was only ever available in the original Xbox version of Outrun 2 (along with the 2nd bonus level, Daytona USA 2: Power Edition's challenge course) and it was a pretty fantastic unlockable treat for fans of Sega's unreleased Model 3 racers. It's a shame that the two bonus courses never made it into any of the subsequent home version of Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast, but I guess they were omitted due to memory restrictions.

In order to try and mimic Outrun's bonus level, I've combined 4 separate Scud Race videos together and tried as much as I could to get the timing for each section the same, which works for the first three, but I'm a bit out on the expert track (but funnily enough by the end the Outrun Ferrari has pretty much caught up with the McLaren, which is probably because I'm not very good at the Scud's expert track and I couldn't be arsed to try and get video capture of a really decent run through it)

On a related note, I really need to get a better PC that's capable of running Supermodel at full framerate, along with a compatible force feedback wheel.

You can now enable force feedback from the latest GUI build. I certainly hope they continue working on that emulator. The Model2 emulator is all but dead, and MAME will take forever to implement it in a playable state.

As usual the more "modern" game on the Xbox has less distinct textures and far lower contrast. Model 3 is still god.

I used to own OutRun 2 on Xbox (as well as Coast 2 Coast).

I can tell you first hand that the Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 bonus tracks looked significantly worse than those from the 1996 and 1998 Model 3 games. Missing animations like the waterfalls in Scud Race, missing fish and rollercoaster isn't running in Daytona USA 2, the lighting wasn't as good and/or some of it ismissing, textures were blurry, there was no anti-aliasing and the framerate sometimes dipped well below 60fps for a few moments. It wasn't a fault of the Xbox hardware as it was more than capable of reproducing Model 3 games, it was the OutRun 2 engine and the fact that Sumo did all the work in a short amount of time. While it was a very nice homage to Scud Race and Daytona USA , it still looked very "off".

On a side note, I've read YouTube comments that the Japanese version of those tracks looked better, but cannot confirm that.

As far as steering wheels for use with Supermodel, is the Logictech G27 a good choice ??

Amen. Playing SCUD Race after 15+ years would be the best thing ever.

I visited the old arcade last year, but alas SCUD race was gone!

I use a MOMO, the G27's older brother and it's pretty good.
