I feel sorry for people who can't appreciate PC gaming, it's totally where it's at and is a massive platform with a big user-base, i'd hardly say 'nobody cares'

I feel sorry for people who only buy proprietary PCs and then try to game on them. Actually, I feel sorry for most of the people I know with Macs or PCs and they will never know what is inside that silly box the paid too much for, and will buy another one at the first sign of trouble without any idea that most repairs are simple.

It's because it works the same way that Master System Compatibility worked in the Genesis, PS1 compatibility worked in the PS2, and Gamecube compatibility worked in the Wii. When in Wii Mode the system doesn't have access to the Wii U hardware features, it's essentially identical to a Wii in this mode. The end result is that you have perfect compatibility but no perks. The PS3 was like this too at first with the 60GB models. Sony tried to force an upscaling filter and it looked god awful. I think they might have addressed this a good while later with a Firmware update. So Nintendo could do that as well.
I'm aware that the Wii U runs Wii games natively. I'm also very well aware of the engineering aspects you seem to think you have a grasp on.
You don't need to explain "Why" they don't do things like upscale those old games, or point out that Sony sucked at it and we all somehow dodged a bullet. You don't need to explain that Nintendo knows what's good for us.
My point is that the Wii U should have been better designed to offer it as an option in the first place. It would have sold more consoles.
that actually does exist. we used to go to gamesyndicate in rotterdam library. even tho it was mainly for pc gamers. those same chicks that were playing counterstrike there would play ds on the lounge side. and guess what they were all playing mario kart. and were they hot?
damn right
I still believe PC gaming only wins if you play games by yourself. I'm not gonna wheel a tower PC into the living room and buy some proprietary controller to have a decent living room gaming experience. Consoles are awesome, you switch it on, put in the game and play, if someone else is there, they can join in, whether it be a racing game, platform game, or whatever. It doesn't have to turn into a project. PC games simply cannot beat that ease of real social gaming. Maybe the Steam Box will change that, but that arguably isn't really a PC if it's designed for game-use only.
We do so much stuff on the PC these days, that i think it's great to shut that thing off and go play some games on an actual console. Plus, i don't care about online gaming; i always like to use games to socialize with friends, etc.( you know, having personal interaction ) and i can't play a 2 , 3 or 4 player game on a PC.
Step 1: Plug in an xbox 360 controller or the wireless dongle.
Step 2: Instead of physically putting in the game disc. Click on it in.
Step 3: Turn on your controller(s).
Step 4: Bask in the glorious realization that your $300, relatively piece of shit HTPC, can play all kinds of games on low settings at 60FPS/1080p, and still look better than consoles, especially when split-screen gaming.
Perhaps better than a PS3/Xbox360 right now, but not at those consoles release date, I don't think in 2006 a $300 PC could play GTA 4 at 1080p. Besides why not spend the extra however many dollars just for the convenience of an existing console eco-system for accessories, games etc.
No, but Moore's law has kicked the shit out of the economics of the console market. Right now you can get a $300 PC that plays games at 1080p or better, at 60FPS or better.
Add a decent video card to that and what do you have? For around the price of a next gen console. $500-600. You can have a PC that already blows them away, with a similar shelf life if you went with a mid-range GPU, and you get to keep the freedom of using controllers and accessories from all over the place. Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, Logitech, Razer, etc.
I'm not saying Nintendo knows better about what's good for us or that we dodged a bullet like you are implying. I'm simply saying what is most likely the reason why it doesn't upscale Wii games at the moment.
As for the Wii U being designed to just upscale Wii games from the get go, they could still add it in a Firmware update like Sony did. Personally I'm fine with it being 480p in Wii mode. Would HD be better? Sure, but it's not a downgrade from the Wii so I can't really complain. It's a much better solution than what the 360 does where your required to download a game specific emulator for each Original Xbox game. I'll take 100% accurate hardware compatibility over a spotty emulator that upscales any day.
I have a pretty decent PC and even I wont say it completely replaces my consoles. There's some games you just can't get on your PC. JRPGs are few and far between. Local Multiplayer isn't quite as doable as not as many PC games support it. While there are some key Fighters on PC, it's still missing a lot that are on consoles. My PC get's used mostly for MMOs, RTSes, FPSes, Simulation games, and a handful of racers. My platformers, RPGs, Fighters, etc. are all on my consoles.
Then there's the aspect of online communities. Some PC games have better online communities than their console counterparts (Minecraft, most MMOs, Valve Shooters, etc.) but a lot of games are more worth playing on a console because there's a larger community (Most Fighters, Popular shooters like Battlefield and CoD, etc.). So a PC really isn't a good all-in replacement for a console unless you only care about graphics and tech demos and only focus on mostly Western titles.
The better combination is to have a PC and at least one current gen console, possibly 2. I'd say a rock solid combo for this generation would be PC and a Wii U or PS4 if not both. The consoles will cover your fix for Japanese developed games like your JRPGs, your Nintendo franchises, your quirky Japanese Action games and Platformers, as well as being ideal for local multiplayer. Your PC will be good for playing the best versions of multiplats and the PC exclusive games.

Well to play a lot of games these days, you have to have a fairly high powered "Crysis ready" rig. And I don't think a lot of people are willing to invest that kind of money. Also not a lot of people know about Linux and Windows 8 refuses to support Steam
A lot of people still sort of view computers strictly "for work", not for play. That's probably why.
Guessing you've never heard of LAN parties have you?
