I agree, but there are still some worthy exclusives like the GG Shinobis, Super Columns, Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift II, Tails' Adventure, the Shining Force games, and a couple baseball games like The Majors and WSB '95. I heard GP Rider might be better and G-Loc is different (not sure if it's better than the SMS one, though). Some GG ports do puzzle me, though. Space Harrier especially. What the heck is up with that port? It's almost like a fan hack with the odd graphical changes.
I can't wait until someone finds a way to scale the GG to full size when displaying over RGB
BrianC's mention of Space Harrier reminded me, we can't forget Panzer Dragoon Mini.
That's one heck of an 8-bit rendition of the first Panzer Dragoon game.
GG games I played the most were:
Shinobi 1 & 2. Excellent platformers with nothing wrong with them other than they were difficult.
Shining Force. Fun game. Shame the other GG Shining Forces didnt get released in the US.
Ninja Gaiden. Probably one of the weakest Ninja Gaiden games around but I still had fun with it.
Crystal Warriors- Fun strategy RPG.
Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck. Another fun platformer with excellent graphics.
Defenders of Oasis - Best true RPG on GG but it had some drawbacks such as weak battle scene graphics and some annoying backtracking. Great story and good overworld graphics.
For some reason I never got to play Ax Battler. Probably should have picked it up and thought about it but never did for some reason.
For some reason I played Cpt America and The Avengers a lot maybe because I didnt have the SNES or Genesis version. Wasnt a bad port actually for what it was.
I also had the first X-Men game and it was pretty bad, sorry.
Well, all the X-Men games probably do suck, but they're interesting for allowing you to use characters you don't normally get to use in sidescrollers(Bishop and Havok being the first that come to mind).
I was really into the idea of getting a Game Gear again last month. I had one back in the day, but sold it. Eventually, I decided against getting the console due to having to re-cap the thing, the bad screen, low resolution vs SMS and wanting to focus on other things.
A screen magnifier (about £5 off eBay) is a good investment for the GG; especially, for SMS mode games like Castle of Illusion of Chase HQ where the games are a direct port from the SMS and everything appears a lot smaller on-screen.
I got back into the GG about 4 years ago and I was really shocked about how little I knew about the games that were available. There really is a wealth of great stuff:
- Japanese exclusives like Ninku Gaiden, Puyo Puyo 2, The Coca Cola Kid, Ronald McDonald in Magical World
- US releases like Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man, Pac-Attack, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike
- games that are very different to their SMS counterparts like Double Dragon or Alien Syndrome
- Euro gems like Tintin in Tibet or The Smurfs
And that's just the reasonably common stuff. There are lots of different colour GGs with varying levels of rarity and obscure editions of games, pirate carts or prototypes (if you're that way inclined). Another plus with the GG is that there's no region encoding which means you can buy games from all over the world and play them on any GG without any problems (as long as the caps are working)
I find Castle of Illusion unplayable because of how small it is. Land is much better.
Royal Stone(sequel to Crystal Warriors) is translated:

On top of 3 Shining Force's, and who knows what else, this handheld wasn't shy on SRPGs.
What gets me is they decided to localize the 2nd one. The first is only playable in English, if you play the Sega CD game. Fans translated the 3rd, so there's also that, but it's still weird that they skipped the first, and only localized the middle game.
