At least Miyamoto (spelling?) told it like it was about DKC. Until the higher ups made him retract his statement.

I hear that from people occasionally. I've never played the third one though so I don't know. I kind-of like the second game but not enough to ever get me to continue on with the series.
Usually people on other forums are shocked that I dislike DKC, especially its graphical style.
Really, what asshole decided to put him in a tie? That was "hip" by 90's standards.
Heh, reminds me(for some reason), one of the mags within the subscription I had, had an interview with Miyamoto, I think around the time of Super Metroid. He considered Sonic to be very good. In fact, read it for yourself(don't mind my shitty editing, the question was on the lower left of the page, and the answer more in the middle):

I absolutely despise the look of DKC, I like the sharper renders in Sonic 3D Blast a lot more. In DKC everything looks muddy.

^ in so far i recall he thought it was an awfull game with bad design
edit here you go >> “Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good.” - Shigeru Miyamoto
which proved to be quite true over the years
as long as the graphics are purdy good gameplay be damned in the mainstream

People have theorized Miyamoto had some hostility towards DKC because it was in direct in-house competition with his own pet project, Yoshi's Island. There was also a lot of pressure at the time for 2D games to emulate the look of 3D games and embrace the digitized graphics style which he as forgoing in his upcoming game.
Though I think you also have to look at it from his perspective, as Donkey Kong was his baby and Rare's vision for the character was drastically different from his. Control of the creation that he helped put Nintendo on the map with was now out of his hands. That's excuse enough to be a little raw and critical I think.
I don't know really know if Nintendo "forced" him to take back that quote for PR reasons (because what does he care he's thinking of retiring anyway) or if in recent years he just softened to the game as it became successful and time marched on.
