Default Tank controls -- Yay or Nay?

For survival horror games of old, Silent Hill and Resident Evil in particular, the tank controls for those games. It's a control scheme I always hear people complain about, but I have no idea why: I like tank controls. I think it's a perfect control setup for those games.

    So, your opinions?

I can stomach them but with analog control there is no real need for them at all anymore

Yay if playing as a tank. Nay if playing as a human.

    Pretty much this.
But even then only if they are going for overall super realistic.

Dual analog or press a button to move + single analog for steering is so much better. It's just a control scheme that is overall not very intuitive.

In Virtual On or Cybersled I can take tank controls or have more standard controls either way. I didn't recognize Resident Evil's miserably broken turn mechanics as tank controls because it is done with one stick. I just saw a horribly broken gameplay mechanic that artificially gimped the player's ability to avoid slow lumbering enemies, much less faster dogs. There was never any reason why they couldn't have allowed for a fast 180 degree turn around. Overhead shooters on the Master System and NES play better than Resident Evil.

I'd rather them put more effort into making the actual game scarier, not more annoying to control in that case :P

Agreed(not that I've ever been into survival horror), if you need to scare the player, use more psychology.

Tank controls helped to build the atmosphere and differentiate those games from other fare. Nowadays the survival horror genre is nothing more than a "gorified" action adventure. They've lost the charm and character of yesteryear.

I haven't enjoyed 4, 5 or 6 so my vote went for tank controls. I never thought of it as a broken mechanic nor did it hinder my ability to enjoy/play a game.

There are enough games without tank controls for people who don't like them anyways.

Thought they were weird at first but eventually grew to like them.

The control scheme works very well for the PS1 Resident Evil games and Silent Hill. I never had any problem with them, and just because the scheme isn't in vogue today doesn't make it poor. I kind of like the "tank style" in 3rd person games like that. Now, if we can get down to what's really important as far as control schemes go, let's make 2014 the year of the trackball!
