Default Sega CD Makes Scratching Noise

    Hey all,

I did some searching on the problem but seems like mine's unique enough. I have a Model 2 Sega CD which I bought a long time ago. It's always worked fine, until today when we tried to play Wheel of Fortune. It sounds like the disc is hitting something as it spins up and won't read. The disc appears to be in good shape, with a small scratch around the edge. I tried cleaning both the disc and the Sega CD but the game won't read. I tried a few other Sega CD games, they work perfectly.

Could the disc be slightly too tight and requires a little retooling?

Any help would be great, thanks in advance!

Years ago I had a similar problem with my SCD 2. If I remember right, I put some washers under the sagging drive mechanism supports and I never had an issue again. Let me see if I can find a picture.

Sounds like I need to disassemble the unit to do that, correct?

Here's a quick video I took of the problem.

I couldn't find a picture. Yeah you do have to 'take it apart' but it's really easy, the plastic just lifts off after you take out all the screws. In my case, and sounds like in yours as well, the disc hit the tray because the lens mechanism is too low after a few decades. I just put some rubber washers under the drive's supports. I don't see why that shouldn't work.

Yeah your unit is suffering from the same issue as my model 2 sega CD (mine was much much worse then what yours is to the point of where the disk would hardly spin, but when it would it would burn a ring into the disk). I posted about this very issue in the sega CD repair topic
