its been a while but that was one of the things i didnt like about sa 2

the extra character in sa 1 were already annoying enough but at least they were optional
i could play as sonic if i wanted too and usually defaulted to tails and ignored the rest

in sa 2 i am forced to play character i dont want to play as am not interested in or dont like

and that rather zapped my interest especially with shadow whom i dont really care for

I didn't see the other characters in SA1 as optional. I just saw it as a difference in order. You still have to play through all of every character's stages to get to the final boss and beat the game. SA2 has you alternating, which I found kept up my interest moreso than playing the same thing in a row. *shrug*

Sonic 1-3 > DKC 1-3. I like the DKC games a lot but they're not in 16-bit Sonic's league. DKC might win the soundtrack category, though.

If by Donkey Kong 64 you mean Donkey Kong on Commodore 64, I might accept that. DK on N64 is trash aside from the classic games included.

    Sonic

I hate DKC and still think it is one of THE most over rated pieces of shit ever made. No contest for me, Sonic obliterates that shit in my mind with no effort. It was all major hype about the stupid CG bullshit graphics and nothing more. Magazines of the time acted like it was some amazing feat that the SFC was rendering itself. What bullshit!! The one and only reason it would not have looked as good on the MD or PC Engine was colour, nothing more.

The REAL Sonic 3 IS with Sonic and Knuckles. I still have no idea why the hell it was released unfinished. I remember that the Japanese version was going to be 24MEG and be the full game but then they went with Sonic and Knuckles instead.

Not really related to this thread but I will say that I also hate Mario games. Over rated goes without saying. There has been only 2 that I have liked and managed to finish; SMB4:SMW and Mario 64. Could not play the rest. I also think RARE games are HORRIBLY over rated in general. I did not like the Banjo games either. Boring, boring, boring. The one and only RARE game I liked was Conker on the XBOX. No interest in Golden Eye and Perfect Dark was just boring to me because I hate 99% of FPS games

Here are some opinions! They're mine.

Sonic 3 is great. It's just half of a really awesome game, though, and I don't see the sense in comparing it by itself to anything unless you are currently in most of 1994. As soon as Sonic & Knuckles came out and I heard about Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I knew right away what the real Sonic 3 was.

Donkey Kong Country is overrated and mediocre. Maybe the sequels really are great. I wouldn't know because I haven't played them.

Sonic Adventure 2 is much better than Sonic Adventure 1, but the emerald hunting stages are a drag. Except Mad Space, that one was cool.

Mario games are good fun, but 2D Mario isn't nearly as good as the Genesis Sonic trilogy.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

Hmm... that's pretty hard. The Genesis Sonic games are fantastic, fantastic games, among the best platformers ever made without question... but so are the SNES Donkey Kong Country games. The DKC games are absolutely exceptional, with some of the best graphics and sound of the generation and lots of outstanding gameplay as well. If I was forced to choose.. maybe Sonic, but if so not by much, and that's not definite. The first DKC is a really great game, and each sequel after it was even better. DKC3 is one of the best platformers of the generation, it really is.

Why does the OP not want to include Sonic & Knuckles, though? I certainly would. All four of those games released before the first Donkey Kong Country did, after all, and Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are just two halves of the same game; without S&K, S3 isn't nearly as great as it is linked.

As for handheld games, the Game Gear Sonic games are mostly subpar, but I do like the first one; Sonic the Hedgehog for GG is a good game, though none of its sequels (2, Chaos, Triple Trouble, Blast) are. The Game Boy three Donkey Kong Land games are also good, but also flawed -- those games just don't play well on the blurry, monochrome GB screen. With a Super Game Boy they're better, but that';s not handheld... though a GBC also helps a lot, that wasn't available until later. I imagine a GB Pocket would also be an improvement, though you'd still have lots of color-blending causing you to not notice things. That's really a huge problem in the B&W DKL games. Even so, considering how mediocre most of the GG Sonic games are, I would choose Donkey Kong Land as the better series. The DKL games aren't the best platformers on the Game Boy -- that graphical style just isn't quite suited for a B&W handheld -- but they are definitely better than the GG Sonics overall.

For other platformers on the handhelds in these franchises, the two GG Tails games are okay, not as good as Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for GG but better than the other Sonic titles. Donkey Kong ['94] for Game Boy, on the other hand, is an absolutely exceptional game that's among the greatest puzzle-platformers ever made, and is better than any other Donkey Kong or Sonic handheld game of the '90s. But that isn't a "DK Land" title; it was released just before it, and was made by Nintendo of Japan, not Rare.

Because it makes it easier for DKC3 to win by not including it.

I just wanna add that to some people like myself the speed of the Sonic games is what hurts them. Some of us prefer slower paced platformers. I like Sonic enough but its not like my favorite platform series ever due to the speed factor.

    Pfft.

    Sonic 1 > DKC1
    DKC2 > Sonic 2
    Sonic 3 > DKC3

    Sonic 3&Knuckles, a.k.a Sonic 3 Director's Cut >>>>>> all.

Except fishing wasn't mandatory in OoT. It was (kinda) in SA1.

BTW, I find that those who like SA1 and 2 the most are those who were young during that time/grew up with those games. Nostalgia can be the only defense for so liking what are two barely passable games that haven't aged well at all.
