    Default Puzzle Game Addicts!

This is a thread where we can talk about our puzzle game addictions.

    Some of my favorites:

    -Adventures of Lolo
Another great series, probably inspired by Sokoban. I played the original recently and may be a bit too smart for it now, but still fun nonetheless.

    -Klonoa
Plenty of puzzle/platformer goodness! The WonderSwan one was almost entirely dedicated to puzzles, much to the dismay of some, but was actually not that bad either.

    -Lode Runner
Some versions are better than others. The NES one is among my favorites as its the one I'm most familiar with. Still, it's a formula that's hard to go wrong with. Probably the prototype of the puzzle-platformer.

    -The Lost Vikings
I really enjoy the series. One of the best and most definitive puzzle-platformers out there. Really wish they'd make a sequel though.

    -Sokoban
I own this on Genesis as "Shove It: The Warehouse Game" and it is highly addictive. The lifespan is increased by the editor as well as the numerous clones which allow this to be done via PC.

    -Tetris
Overrated at times and the ability to create combos is nil, but still good. Like many, the Game Boy version was my introduction and my personal favorite version. I'm kind of taking a liking to the Disney Magical Tetris version though.

    -Zoop
A somewhat forsaken puzzler that was om every console back in the day. Hated by some, but I spent many hours playing this on my Genesis, which happens to be my favorite version because of the jazzy FM music and palette. The Game Gear and Game Boy versions, which are almost identical thanks to the Z80 basis, come close as well. The CD versions generally sucked though.

Tetris is the one that got me into puzzle games. Unfortunately, it raised the bar so high, I rarely found anything else that even came close to it. However, there are a few others that I enjoyed.

Bust a Move - this is probably the closest to Tetris for me. Bust-a-Move 2 on the N64 (or PSX or Saturn) was near puzzling perfection. I loved the puzzle mode, but the vs. mode put this over the top. It's a ton of fun against others, and the only puzzle game that I can think of that's a genuinely good multiplayer game as well. There's little that's as satisfying as dropping a bunch of bubbles on your opponent and watching their angst

Mr. Driller is a very good puzzle game as well. I played this on both the GBA and DS, and both versions were great. I never owned the DC version, which is surprising considering the library I had for it was pretty good BITD.

The only other puzzle game I can think of that I put a lot of time into was Shanghai. There are a ton of versions of this game, but I played the Lynx version to death. I liked the non-stressful, zen aspect of playing the game and used to play it before I went to bed at night. Totally relaxed me. Come to think of it, maybe I should dust off the Lynx and start playing it again. It has a very therapeutic quality to it.

Chuck's Challenge is a good puzzle game for Android, iOS, PC, Mac and Linux. It was made by the same guy who made Chip's Challenge and it plays almost the same way. Unfortunately, the graphics on every version except the iOS version are rather ugly 3D.

Can't say I've ever been a huge puzzle fanatic, outside of the block dropping types to kill a few minutes.

That said, always thought Columns was just as fun as Tetris. Apparently that morphed into Puyo Puyo(think Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, or Kirby's Avalanche, if you haven't played it otherwise).

Dr. Mario was up there as a good time waster too.

First exposure to Sokoban was Boxxle on the original Game Boy.

My first exposure to the Breakout type was Alleyway on the same handheld. Kind of got into the arcade Arkanoid's when I first tried the Raine emulator way back when.

I do play with some of these, while I'm waiting for things on my PC:
    http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/
^as it states, portable, just plays right from the file you download. If you want 'em all, just scroll down and grab the "puzzles.zip" file. Help files may not work on recent windows versions though.

Came across those looking for a good Sudoku game, and Solo there is a pretty much perfect.

Columns III on the Genesis, Puzzle Fighter II on anything (except the GBA version- whatta disappointment), any version of Panel de Pon, Super Tetris on DOS pc... some of the best puzzlers out there and all are fun head to head (except Super Tetris- don't remember if it had two player).

I love to play Puyo Puyo, Magical Drop, my favorite will always be Puzzle Bobble (Bust-A-Move) though.

Also, I really got addicted to BeBall (Chew Man Fu) for the PC Engine (Turbo) for quite awhile.

I'm a Puyo Puyo man myself. I've had my copy of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine since I was a kid in '93/'94; I can still sit down and play it all the way through - it is just so enjoyable, and has such a nostalgic ending for me. Used to make my Dad play co-op for hours.

I'm looking to build a library of SNES games and have been wondering if there are any significant difference between Dr.RMBM and Kirby's Avalanche. In any case, Compile is definitely one of my favorite developers.

Wind and Water in Dreamcast - great technical gameplay with superb chaining and different options and techniques. Superb learning curve and a brilliant story. Even has awesome mini games. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Picture Puzzle on Neo Geo Pocket Colour (although Mario Picross or any of the Picross type games on any other system - DS has loads) just a brilliant logical puzzler. Great fun and the difficulty scales up nicely.

Puzzle Quest - played the DS version but the others will be the same. Nice match three game crossed with and RPG. Lots of opportunity to customise your play style and lots of variations on the basic game play (e.g. Clear the field leaving nothing left in order to win a siege and capture a town, get a certain amount of chains to learn a new spell or level up a mount etc) excellent game.

Heroes of Might and Magic Clash of Heroes (I think that is the name) awesome RPG match three puzzler. Match three troop types vertically and they then count down before charging the opponent. Match them horizontally to form defensive barriers etc. lots of troop types, some nice variation and a pretty decent story. On DS

Used to enjoy chilling out playing Tetrisphere on N64. Not a classic but just decent and might grab you.

Plus loads I can't remember right now

I was going to mention these but wanted to give other people the opportunity as a kickstart.

Yoshi's Cookie I have played a bit and is also pretty solid.
Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon/Puzzle League is good, but I'm still learning how to create effective combos!

And yes, I like Columns alot. Super Columns on GG is pretty good because of the different modes and the ability to turn stacks sideways.

New Tetris for the N64 is the best Tetris. Also Solomon's Key and Fire n' Ice for the NES rock. I also love Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes that was released a few years ago. I highly recommend it. (edit: greyfox already mentioned it above) It might still be on Steam, if not then just grab the NDS copy.

I am all about Puyo Puyo Tsu (arcade, MD, SFC), Tetris DX for Game Boy, and Money Idol Exchanger (Neo Geo MVS arcade). It's like Magical Drop, but it's fun! shots fired

Pac-attack is okay, as is puzzle bobble, panel de pon, and Yoshi's Cookie. Oh, Quarth is great too.
