I recently installed the FM Sound Unit into my Master System. Even though it's been done before I did my own PSG vs. FM sound comparisons.

You can hear Shinobi with FM Sound in the last video:

I died a little bit inside when I realized that the English Phantasy does not have FM Sound...

Anyway, I think I will buy a Power Base Mini FM. It will work with Mega Everdrive attached?

No. Genesis cartridges don't fit the Master System slot.

Oh, of course. How stupid I am. So what should be a FM Power Base with Megadrive slot.

Someone in this thread earlier mentioned Psychic World. I gave it a try and its actually a pretty fun side-scroller. Some of the comments say this game feels like Metroid, I actually think it feels more like Mega Man. The controls are solid except that it is really frustrating switching weapons and using powers due to the lack of buttons on the SMS controller - you have to press Down and jump at the same time to pull up your menu, and once in the menu you can navigate to what you want to use, but doing this does not pause the game.

www.romhacking.net is your friend! If you have a Master EverDrive, you can patch the US Master System ROM of Ys The Vanished Omens and the JP Master System ROM of Phantasy Star to restore FM sound.

    I read weird things here.

Cyber Shinobi is not a good SMS game, far from that (probably the worst Shinobi).
Golden Axe or Altered Beast ports were impressive back in the days, but aged very badly, like all 8-bits games that tried to mimic 16-bits ones. They play very badly, have ugly colors, lots of flickering, and choppy scrolling.

I think the best SMS games are those which were designed as 8-bits games. For example the Mickey or Donald's games didn't try to mimic the Megadrive ones, they were specifically designed for a 8 bits machine and were all excellent, sometimes even better than the 16 bits game.

Some old games aged very well : I had a lot of fun recently replaying the 1st Wonderboy, whereas it's a very simple game. The 2nd and 3rd are killers, but everybody knows that I think

Christuserloeser mentioned it, but Ninja Gaiden on the SMS is surprisingly good. It's a different game, but in many ways it's better than the NES version. It doesn't rely on cheap initial frustration for challenge.

I need to pull out my Master and actually play a few of my games on it more than once a year.

IIRC, it's also much more recent. That helps

The only thing that looks impressive there are the multi colored sprites. Otherwise, I think Sword Master actually looks better.

    My personal favorites:

Aladdin: Very nice addition to the Mega Drive version with nice graphics and cutscenes. Love the addition of the actual Cave of Wonders level in which you meet the Carpet and have to avoid touching treasures.

Castle Of Illusion: My least favorite of the Illusion series on Master System, probably because nostalgia is not a factor for me. I don't like the levels as much as I do in the others, they tend to go on too long for me.

Jurassic Park: Mostly like this because of the driving scenes - and come on, it's Jurassic Park!

Land Of Illusion: Best of the best. Cut-scenes, lots of characters, shorter but more (and more varied) levels, cool power-ups such as the shrinking ray and rope to climb walls (which both also allow you to replay and reach places in previously playels levels that you couldn't reach before). Loved this game ever since I first played it.

Legend Of Illusion: Second favorite in the Master System Illusion series. It feels like a step back from Land, but still looks/plays great and it has some very beautiful levels.

Lemmings: Played several versions of this game, this one always stood out for me. Not sure why, but this is my favorite version of Lemmings.

Sonic The Hedgehog: This is my favorite Sonic game, I actually prefer it over the Mega Drive titles. I already liked the look and feel but was ultimately sold on the look and tune of the Jungle level.

Star Wars: Same as the NES version, only with better sounds and graphics. Too bad Empire Strikes Back was never released, one of my favorites on NES.

I only got into the Master System last year and I've been playing it a lot over the past several months. These are my top picks:

Land of Illusion - As others said this is a fantastic game. Easily the best platformer on the console. Full of bright and colorful graphics, perfect controls and all the charm you'd want from a Mickey game.

Golvellius - It can be a bit grindy at times but I actually think I like this game more than the Zeldas on the NES. Slowly unlocking the world is a lot of fun, the NPC dialogue is really humorous and there's loads of cool power ups that do some pretty fascinating things. It's become one of my favorite 8-bit adventure titles.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Aside from the Mickey games this is the best platformer on the console. It's a fantastic translation from the Genesis that does its own thing with the hardware available instead of trying to be too much like the 16-bit games (something that hurt the later 8-bit Sonics in my opinion). This game is solid and has grown to be one of my favorites in the franchise to just pick up and play on lazy days.

Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap - Monster Land is fun, but Dragon's Trap takes it to another level with a true open world and cool transformation system. This one is a classic in every sense. If you own a Master System or a TG-16 you should definitely track down a version of it. I wouldn't hesitate to put this at #1 if I were making a top-ten list.

Choplifter - I have a lot of good memories playing the arcade cabinet of this at K-Mart as a kid, but there weren't really any home versions of the arcade available to me. The Master System remedies this and offers the best home port of the arcade remake that I know of. There's not a lot to it but it's arcade simplicity at its finest and plays with the formula of Defender in a really cool way.

Fantasy Zone 2 - I'm going to be a little controversial in saying that I prefer Sunsoft's Famicom port of the original game to the Master System version, but Fantasy Zone 2 was made for the console and it shows. Fantasy Zone is awesome and if Super Fantasy Zone didn't exist, this would be my favorite entry in the series.

Ninja Gaiden - Not quite as legendary as the NES game, Ninja Gaiden is still a solid action platformer (and a hell of a lot easier). It looks good, sounds pretty good and controls great. It's a lot of fun to challenge yourself to sword-only runs.

Rastan - An impressively done port of the arcade. It's a challenge that controls well and has a shameless Conan the Barbarian theme. One of the classics that Nintendo fans missed out on.

R-Type - Not the definitive home port, but a good one. R-Type is to the Master System what Gradius is to the NES. It's a legendary game that helped define the genre.
