Most Underwhelming Genesis Bosses

I got stuck at the boss in the Labyrinth Zone for months because I thought I had to jump up fast enough to hit him and stay above water. I got good enough at it that I could hit him six times but he didn't asplode. I'm not sure what caused me to try staying ahead of the water and below Robotnik just to get to the top but it delayed my finishing the game for three months.

I think I got through that one by dumb luck. I wasn't able to keep up with him so I just tried to keep from drowning, hoping that at the top I'll get the real fight, and managed to survive long enough to see that the whole point was just to escape, not to bash him.
