I own 50 different 2600 cartridges and I'd say 30 are absolutely fun. Some of my favorites are Winter Games, Frogs and Flies, Dark Cavern, Artillery Ambush, Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Ms. Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, Riddle of the Sphinx, Haunted House, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Frogger, Video Pinball (just for the sheer absurdity of the physics), Midnight Magic (you wouldn't believe this was a 2600 game) and several others I can't remember off the top of my head.

Microsoft should invest in games, and not spend money making movies about digging up garbage.

I'll never go back to playing 2600 games, especially E.T. I just don't care enough to waste my time with it any more.

Spider Fighter is an excellent 2600 game, very very frantic shmup once you get into it.

I'm lucky I got to try one during the NES era. I'd hate to turn out to be the kind of ignorant asshole that writes it off because the games "don't hold up."

Perhaps people forget that games like the Donkey Kong trilogy(with a compilation for the first 2), Kung Fu(Master), Pac-Man, Mario Bros., City Connection, Clu Clu Land, Karate Champ, Millipede, Joust, Balloon Fight, Bump 'n Jump, Boulder Dash, etc. all appeared on the NES(with Dig Dug, Mappy, etc., on the Famicom).

Yes and no, but it makes sense. They want live to be a service offering across a number of different areas.

It's akin to Netflix making their own shows. At some point just sticking to your core offering doesn't grow your business any further, or at least not at the rate you want it, so you need to expand your catalog.

If this was a good investment or not remains to be seen, but the general idea behind it isn't all that bad.
