I feel like the prices on a lot of games have been going up steadily the last few months. I'd been dragging my feet on getting the majority of the Genesis games I wanted when I decided to finally hunt down a copy of a SNES game or two I wanted only to discover a huge portion of SNES games have gotten stupidly expensive.

I figure it's only a matter of time before Genesis games get stupid expensive too, so I've been spending most of my fun money on Genesis games. Worse case scenario I have all the games I want and nothing else to "hunt" for. Best case scenario I get all the games I want before they go consistently over 50 bucks.

The Game Grumps are an example of the kind of crap you have to watch out for. I'm not a fan of their show, but the month they did Pocky and Rocky for the SNES prices doubled. A game I was dragging my feet on getting because it was 40-ish dollars jumped to 80.

Genesis prices are definitely on the rise. Look at what something like Crusader of Centy is going for nowadays, for example.

It's only gonna get worse if and when the movie based on Console Wars is released.

That's exactly what my wife and I were just talking about. The movie will cause a lot of interest from first time retro gamers.

It is not much of a surprise if you consider that there are x CIB copies in good condition of a game in circulation but x*2 collectors looking for the game.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

^This. I'm starting to get back into MD collecting after being all about the Saturn for the past two years and I'm pretty much only going for Japanese versions.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

Hope the Neo Geo AES prices aren't next, I mean. There already unaffordable to many as is.

Does anyone have experience with those cheap chinese Repro carts? Is that a better solution (outside of the obvious solution of plain emulation)?

Ah, the curse of continuing to buy games for older systems. A little word of mouth can cause a lot of wallet pain at times, and it ends up with you waiting (and hoping) for the prices to go down again once sellers see that no one's going to buy a complete copy of Sonic the Hedgehog for $149.

After that film comes out, I can just picture the eBay auction headers:
SONIC 2 CIB Ultra Rare "Not For Resale Version" L@@K Great Seller

    Yours for only $249.99

The upside (?) to the recent price inflation for retro games and systems is that the bubble has to burst sometime, right? I mean, it's not like these sale prices are being sustained by collectors on a regular basis. I've seen some of those 100+ carts sit endlessly on eBay for months.

Man, I'm glad I decided to go the flash cart route and only collect systems when they were relatively cheap.

To be honest I'm a bit worried about what that film is going to do to prices too. AT Games may just get a ton more sales on those crappy clones, or the Genesis could explode after it's stayed so reasonable after SNES prices went so nuts. I'm glad I got my Mega Everdrive though, at least I'll have no lack of being able to play the games.

That's my angle now too. I bought the systems I wanted years ago. Now it's just a matter of getting them capped as needed.

As far as the film goes, I hope it craps on my favorite systems and brings a little relief to my wallet.
