Default What's an appropriate price for Herzog Zwei?

The game looks very interesting and I really enjoy strategy games however I'm a little put off by the prices I've seen so far(30 to 50$ range). Is it worth it for that much and what would or should its price be? Thanks

$50, it's not a game you're going to finish in one night. You should (hopefully) find enjoyment in exploring different tactics for the various levels. With 40 levels, and the option to play as the good or bad side, and then silly things like trying to win while primarily using motorcycles, it's a game you can come back to without getting bored.

If by chance you have a competent friend to play competitively with then you really shouldn't hesitate to pick it up.

For pretty much the past 15 years complete copies of Herzog Zwei on eBay have hovered around $30-50
I originally got Herzog Zwei in early 1990 when it was $50, at some point sold it (probably for money toward a SegaCD), then when I first got an eBay account Herzog Zwei was one of the first games I re-purchased, and it was $40 complete in early 2000.
I seems there's always been demand, but never feverish demand, and never a lack of supply.

Is 50$ worth it taking the whole collector thing out of the equation?

Absolutely. Especially considering you can just resell it if it isn't your cup of tea. I hope you dig it. I find it can get really fast paced and intense once the controls become 2nd nature.
And really if you're not worried about great condition and in no hurry to get it, you might wait it out for a $30-40 copy.
You definitely want the instruction manual, or find and print out a scan from somewhere.

Thanks for the input and that's a very good point, if its not to my liking atleast I would have no problem re selling.

Wow even back then it was that much? Not like tmnt superstone heist, I would see it cib on the regular for 5$ 2003 circa now its like 45$ plus anywhete you go. Same with psIV I would see for 8$ back in 03 04. The whole retro game inflation is bothersome..

If you have or are planning on getting a pass through device, I believe the Japanese version can be found cheaper, or at least it could be a year or so ago.

The game is in English anyway, so no worries there.

It's probably worth it to spend a little more to get the manual if you ever plan on reselling it.

Yes. Manuals are among the rarest to find.

In my experience, I've been able to rank parts From Rarest to Most Common:

    1. Attached (outside the box) non-gaming packagings (i.e.- CDs, Candy, Paper slips with extra art etc...)
    2. Attached (outside the box) hint/guide books
    3. Attached (inside the box) Maps
    4. Attached (inside the box) allegorical adverts (I don't much care for stupid promo cards, so I never count those as part of CIB'ness)
    5. Manuals
    6. Cover art inserts (inserts for plastic clamshells are notorious for water damage. One single drop of liquid will ruin it forever).
    7. Carts (or CDs) with intact labels/covers
    8. Intact boxes (this is only for plastic Clamshells and those sturdy 3DO ones. For paper thin boxes, it varies by system)

P.S.> I collection only Very Good to Mint condition items. So the above entail thusly.
    P.S.S.?

As for the game, I got it for $30 new back when it was still on the shelves at places like Software Etc. and Babbages. It takes a little getting used to in spots, but it's a fun, fast-paced RTS, and definitely worth picking up if you find it for between $35 and $55 complete.

Actually, if you go on ebay right now, there are three complete copies for $45-$55 (1 US, 2 PAL). There's a fourth one for under $45, but the front's a bit sunfaded, and the cart has a sticker on its label.

How can it be possible to win with only using motorcycles? I only saw those as a waste of time and money, they didn't do anything good.

Thanks for the manual pdf. Yeah I thought for 32$ that's not a bad pickup considering the cart was mint and the rack tag was still on the box.

Unrelated but just scored GODS off a ebay auction for 2$(cart only). Heard the game is a definete worth play

    It wasn't said "only motorcycles"
You make exactly the point: motorcycles are typically a waste of money and seemingly useless. That is what makes it fun trying to load the playfield with them.
Capture all the bases like normal and then build up a cushion of money and then start churning out motorcycles. Try to get 49 of them rolling around, then for your 50th vehicle drop a tank at the enemy homebase, or whatever.. the boat stages were a favorite of mine for playing around with goofy strategies.

And probably thanks to this thread, someone made a Best Offer and purchased that sealed Herzog Zwei which was on eBay for awhile at $129.
