The idea that Sonic is from another dimension parallel to our own makes perfect sense to me, since I always felt that the planet Moebius was simply planet Earth but in a seperate dimension/multi-verse. I really like this aspect of the film's plot and I think that casting Carrey as Robotnik is brilliant. My hopes for this film are now a lot higher than before.

It's amazing that this movie has apparently been in development for years, and they're only now realizing the design is ridiculous? 48 hours after the trailer is posted?

Beware the time the project has been going on is misleading — Sony sat on it for years and seemed to not have done much with it, and then when Paramount picked it up they had to essentially start from scratch if I remember correctly. So the current incarnation of the movie has been going on for like a year at most (which would be surprisingly short for Hollywood from what I gather).

So yeah, it's possible they could try to redo the CG and merge it back with the existing live action scenes. Though I wouldn't hold my hopes up (I wouldn't be surprised if they remove the furriness but keep the rest of the design, completely missing the point).

youngling to fancy sonic.....
Regaurdless of what the final outcome of this
winds up being....Im more terrified of having to
even remotely associate with those chris-chan-ish
sonitards in their magnified frenzy....
Even more so with my ever impressionable 5 year old...
This will be a learning experiance of how
to never behave for him....
While they are at it they need to cut not so cool
anymores gangster music as well....

Egg man is Human and the original plan for Sonic was to have a human girlfriend that looked like Marilyn Monroe Dressed from the Seven Year Itch and to be part of a human rockband.

Form Sonic inception humans and earth were there in some shape or form.

But most of the Sonic games have taken place on Earth. Humans have been part of the original design and of coruse, Eggman is Human too .

Eggman/Robotnik was the only human that was part of the Sonic games during the initial (good) era. And it was precisely when they changed it to the real world with humans (Sonic Adventure?) that it all went downhill.

Personally, I don't really see the appeal of this comedy movie genre of CG-cartoon character(s) shoved into a live-action world, it's even worse when it's an existing IP.

The only movie like that which was actually good was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and that was an original property. And those were actually 2D cartoons, and acknowledged as much.
