I think Sonic Adv is where it really started thanks to the redesign and the green eyes. Mind you I remember some saying Sonic didn't look right in the bonus sections of Sonic CD and lots seems to bitch about the look and music of Sonic R. The only thing I found rather silly with Sonic, is that he can drown in water, but Sonic is able to fight and breath in outer space. But its a video game after all

Even before Sonic Adventure you had the kids arguing between western Sonic (cartoons, comics, Spinball) and Japanese "Segasonic" (Japanese game covers, Sonic cd cutscenes, Sonic OVA) designs.

Anybody remember when the main complaint about Sonic Adventure was broken physics? (and in particular prescripted loops)

Sonic Adventure was a showcase title for the Dreamcast. A lot of their direction, with the more realistic and less cartoony designs for, well, virtually everything, was meant to show the capabilities of the console. That said, had they been consistent with the aesthetic that the franchise had until that point (and I'm not talking about the character redesigns), the game would have been successful anyway. Because it was a full-fledged Sonic title, in 3D, on a brand new Sega console.

An example of a contemporary title to Sonic Adventure that made the transition to 3D but not at the expense of the design and visuals of the world it originated from, was Rayman 2.

Damn, they are jumping the gun on promoting this. I doubt that Sonic design will even carry into the final film.

...maybe that’s the idea? They’re giving their character designs a trial by fire by leaking them so they have plenty of time to correct them when the public reacts negatively.
Just want to say that you called it!

So? The same can be said for Mario 64, as well as the first Sonic itself. It didn't take anything away from the game. I wouldn't have been as interested in SA if it was just the same old Sonic rehashed. That's part of the reason I lost interest in Mario a long time ago (well, apart from growing up...mostly). 64 was great then...nothing.

What are you talking about? 2 was almost entirely new. I don't remember robot Napoleon in the first one, and the worlds were completely different.

Rayman 2 felt more like a tech demo than a cohesive game. Some things just didn't make any sense and as you got farther into the game, it just became silly. Cave of Bad Dreams anyone?

I can't really agree with that. I thought Rayman II was utterly amazing and a real showcase for the DC, It looked just stunning on the DC at the time. I really enjoyed it.

It was and in the making of Sonic Adv (Retrogamer), the Art team said they had gotten a little bored with SONIC and that they looked to age him a little, feeling that the users of the Mega Drive game, we're getting older too. I loved Sonic Adv, its for me the best Sonic game ever made and I loved the scale and sense of adventure in it, the music score alone must have taken ages to produce and cost SEGA a fortune Sure it's aged, but then so have Mario 3D games like Sunshine, which wasn't the best at the time and its flaws and buggy camera system are even worse in this day age.

I just wish the team would drop these silly new characters and just look to make a game where you play only as Sonic and all the levels and stages built around Sonic.

So I was chatting to my colleague at work today and the subject of the upcoming Sonic movie came about. We talked about how it could be possible that Sonic found himself in our world (yeah, it was a long day!) and we both agreed that he must have come from another dimension. So our chat continued and he came up with this theory for how he thinks the plot will pan out in the film, and I really fucking hope he's right! So basically Sonic travelled here from Mobius via some sort of dimensional warp, triggered either by his phenomenal speed or one of the Chaos emeralds. The massive amount of energy triggered by his dimension jump is noticed by the US military and they send in their top scientists and engineers to investigate. This team are led by a certain Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey. He becomes obsessed with finding out where this creature, calling itself Sonic, came from, and how it got here. After chasing the blue speedster all over the place the film will end after Sonic reopens the dimensional warp to return home to Mobius, only to be followed by Robotnik. The unhinged yet brilliant scientist now finds himself in a world of pure untapped potential. A planet populated almost entirely by sweet natured animals. A world that a man of his genius could surely rule over as a God... This will lead in to the events seen in the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, and so the movie will act as a prequel to the original game series. How fucking awesome would that be?! Oh man I really hope my colleague is right about this! What do you guys think of his theory?

Browsley, I have to be honest: that idea is too good to actually make it into the movie. I bet that shot of bald, bushy-mustached Robotnik is as fleeting in the final movie as the devolved T-Rex Bowser they used in the Super Mario Bros movie to lure in audiences. I’m sure 98% of the movie will take place on boring ol’ present-day Earth, where it is exponentially cheaper to film.

The script was leaked before. If I recall correctly, Sonic comes to the human world through a warp ring, and all the rings in the movie act as portals. Robotnik starts as an eccentric human. But he keeps analysing the energy from the other dimension that Sonic leaves behind (like that blue spine that zaps him in the trailer), and this energy starts changing him, making him look closer and closer to how he is in the games.

I never considered it to be a prequel to the first game, that's pretty smart actually.

+1 and i hate that it trashes so much from the original games storyline ( although Sega has been on that train for a while )

Actual conversation I just had with two guys at work.

Me: "Well, however the new Sonic movie turns out at least it'll be better than the Super Mario Bros movie!"

Guy 1: "Hey! I really like that film!"

Guy 2: "Yeah. I think it's actually a pretty good movie."

    Me: "OK..." (walks away)
