Default Sourcing Mega Drive AV Sockets

    Hi all,

I was thinking of modding my Master System II so that I can get a proper RGB out using an AV socket. I was hoping to use the 9-pin DIN socket found on the MD2 so that I could use the same cable to connect it, but it seems that they're a specialised type of socket and I can't find replacements anywhere. Besides pulling them off dead boards, does anyone know where I might be able to find them?

    Thanks

    Sam

What kind of Master System II do you have? If it's the light gray North American one (with the white reset button), then it already has a solder place for an 8 pin DIN socket. All you'd have to do is solder a new socket in and enable it with some modifications to the board.

If it's the Euro version, then you'd be better off getting a panel mount 8 pin DIN socket instead. I don't think any come in the MD/MS style though.

When ApolloBoy used to be here, he used to sell MD style 8 pin DIN sockets sometimes. You could try talking to him over at AtariAge.

Ebay has them, type in "9 pin mini din"

hope the link works, had to edit from phone.

RGB mod on a sms2 (along with other mods) is very worthy. Have done it to mine and don't regret it. I used the 8 pin for mine.

Brilliant, thanks for all the links & help everyone! Guntz & omp, I'm a bit confused - do you both use the 8 pin socket that would fit a Mega Drive 1 console then or is it the 8 pin mini DIN that looks like the MD2 one?

The 8 pin they are referring to are the 8pin Mini Din which is very similar to the 9pin and is a little easier to find and likely cheaper. The Model 1 is a standard Din (not Mini).

Sorry for the confusion, yes in my case I used the standard 8pin din as used in a md1 or sms1. You could use either or, it does not matter.
