I just modded the same type of NES controller last night.
But I put a chopped down Gamecube controller circuit in mine.
So now I have a NES shaped controller with no d-pad (It has analog now),and four buttons.
NES to Wii without having to convert anything but the NES controllers case, and the Gamecube controller's circiut board.
I nixed the c analog, all the shoulder buttons, and the rumble motors on the GC controller.
The NES controller lost everything but the case.(I did keep the A,B,and start/select in place so there arent any holes.),
other than the ones i had to make to fit the Analog, and four buttons.
It dont look pretty, buy I was Shooting for functionality with this, and it works with my softmodded Wii great.
I was wondering when someone would do something similar, it seems like a good solution versus buying converters.
Plus the GC controller board I used was salvage, and I have too many NES controllers.

That's interesting. So it is still basically a gc controller with fewer buttons? Out of curiosity, in which games do you prefer the analog stick over the d-pad?
For Nes I like it better for Mario's, Firehawk,Gun-Nac, and even tetris.
For Genesis I think Im good with a d-pad alone.
But for Snes I prefer it over the d-pad in just about every occasion.
Starfox, F-zero, Super Mario RPG, and Sim City for particular comforts.
Not much for anything else, maybe Atari 2600 games like Pacman.
I like the Master System gamepad and Control Stick just fine for Master System games, even the Genesis D-Pad messes up some controls in Master System games over the stock pads/stick. What I would REALLY like is a Saturn to PS1/PS2 converter.

I didn't do this because I preferred the Gamecube controller over the Classic Pro.
I did it because:
1. I was bored and in the mood to tinker with video game mod ideas.
2. I had everything I needed without paying for materials.
3. Searched near and far into the relative idea and found pretty much nothing similar online.
4. Wanted to bring the classic "feel" of the NES controller to my emulation gaming.
5. I wanted to make use out of one the many extra NES controllers I ended up with. Plus one of my MAD CATZ GC controllers bit the dust and I wanted to find a way to use either the board or the cable to suit my
desires.
6. I wanted to see if it was possible to get a NES style controller to work on my Wii without using a converter.
And in the end I learned you have to think "inside" and "outside" the controller "box".
I'm glad I got it to work, what is strange is that the GC controller board didn't work before and it does now.
I figured I would get everything in place close it up then plug it in and find out the board wouldn't work after being cut down. Or worse blow the GC ports on my Wii, the price of monkeying with something I know little about. I guess I was just lucky.
I don't think I will attempt another one of these types of mods again without better planning.
Here it is:
