No way dude Comix Zone was rad.
Gunstar Heroes and MUSHA for me. I know its supposed to be the best vertical shooter for the system but I just can't dig it.

Toejam and Earl
played this game for the 1st about 8 year ago sines every one back in the day had made it out to be the best genesis game of all time the was so boring i did not get what was the big deal about it good thing i only payed $4 resold it on ebay got $30 for it
I love TJ&E 3 on the Xbox, YET I cant really stand the Genesis versions.
I don't really have one that I can pick for the Genesis... but most of the ultr@ r@re Japanese games that attract daff prices are overrated. Some of them are good, but not something I'd go out of my way to locate and purchase.
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...
Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

The Mortal Kombat games. I dunno why, but I've always been able to see through MK. Shallow fighters liberally coated with gore.
I disagree on the point of the Golden Axes. They were fun for their time. They're a bit overrated now, but at the time...
The only MK games I liked where the MK games that where just compilations of content from prior games - MK Trilogy and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Other than that, I don't really care much for the series.

spiderman and venom: maximum carnage. everyone was like "its like your playing inside the comic book!" so i was like "WOW, gotta get it for my birthday!" ****. what a bad game in general. Other than that, id say MK, though i never bought into that hype (mainly because my parents wouldnt let me get my sega by then and when i mentioned the game they got mad at me for asking about it). Shinobi kind of, but i dont mind that game most of the time. Strider definately. there are more but i am too tired to think of them all. there has to be that one "every-platform" game that just sucks that was overhyped.
Definitely Mortal Kombat. I disagree that it's "aged poorly". It sucked to begin with.
I also have to second Altered Beast. If it weren't for the amusingly bad voice samples and decent character art, that game wouldn't really have anything going for it at all. Shallow and repetitive -- words I generally avoid using to describe a videogame, but Altered Beast definitely fits.
I would say a lot of Disney games were overrated too. The Lion King, The Jungle Book... snoozers.
This one wasn't that highly rated, but I have to mention Spider-Man (the one based on the animated series). For years it was one of the few Genesis games I'd never played, and people kept telling me that it was decent to great. One person said it was the best of all the 2D Spider-Man games. Eventually I picked it up... garbage. It reminds me of X-Men 1 and that Spider-Man/X-Men game, except worse. The scrolling is really choppy. The controls are jumpy. The game itself just feels jittery and messed up. Not fun at all.
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.
Hey guys lay off mortal kombat a bit, great atmosphere music and enough gimmicks to keep us happy,
Comix Zone - I have to admit what was all the fuss about, it was a fighting game with one button for fighting, what a load of over rated cods wallop. Granted lovely graphics and great concept but the gameplay, it didn't have any, you pummel a bad guy to the ground he gets up you do it again he dies.....WOW! Just don't understand it.
ToeJam and Earl was loved because its diversity, music, storyline, style and gameplay was revolutionary in that day, it veered so far from the (I don't know why they didn't put more effort in) norm, where the good guys fight some evil guy for nonsecial reason, unfortunately that appeal has been taken away now and we see it as a boring uninspiring walkaround
Alright two more: Castle of Illusion and Strider. They're really nothing special. I guess their popularity has to do with nostalgia..
I also think Earthworm Jim is a bit overrated.

After a long play on my Genesis last night, I've come to the conclusion that Vectorman was a bit overrated. Fun, yes. Hell yes. It was like they took Metroid, Megaman, and pure awesome, and put them in a blender on puree. But as I recall, back in the day, both Vectorman 1 and 2 had a sort of "ZOMG!" hype to them that they really didn't deserve...particularly Vectorman 2.
Perhaps if the games had been longer with a little more variety I could justify the "ZOMG!"... but as is, I think they're a bit overrated.
Goofy's Hysterical History Tour wasn't as hysterical as Goofy had led me to believe.

MUSHA is way overrated. This game has nothing on games that came out 3-6years later, like Batsugun, Donpachi, Dangun Feveron, any CAVE/Raizing/Treasure/Psikyo shooter after that, etc.
