Our video store rented NES games for $1 for 2 days or SNES and Genesis games for $2 for 2 days. This would have been 1991-1994 era. I would later buy my Saturn from that video store when they sold them off in the early 2000s. It is in quite good condition so I assume not many people rented it.

    Great thread.

I'm amazed they managed to make the music sound so much worse in Road Rash III, but improved it to stereo at least. Same goes for Urban Strike, the propeller for example sounds much less realistic in that game, yet they add stereo to make up for it.

So what are your fave uses of stereo sound on the Mega Drive? I like Super Monaco GP's engine sounds, which help a lot when cars catch up to you, and the music in Tengen's Marble Madness, where the instruments go back and forth between the channels like they're playing hide and seek or something .

I think it's called "Call and Response": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_and_response_(music)

I just enjoyed Stage 1 theme of Thunderforce IV and it features a beautiful call and response between the 2612 and the SN76489 at around the 1:00 minute mark. It's the climax of the song.

The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

Why not just keep the MD OST like Popful Mail then?

Probably just EA not knowing how to make a CD game like all Sony's bad games on SEGA CD.

I think MK3, UMK3 and Flashback on the MD also fit in this list.

I love stuff like this. Makes me think of Dave Murray from Iron Maiden, he does that a lot.

It's especially noticeable around 3:13-3:14, when Paul Di'Anno goes into a quick falsetto, which is responded with an equally quick overtune. (

(Pardon me for even more thread derail)

Great thread. This makes me wonder about another list, though:

which Sega Megadrive/Genesis games do offer the choice between mono and stereo in the option menu? (or via special code / debug menus etc.)?
