SNES Lagoon SNES Review by TheCGdudes!

    Hi

I want to share with all of you the newest episode of "Tony's Forest of SNES". This time around, i talk about Lagoon. I have great memories of playing that game when i was a kid. Even though it is often compared to the first Ys games and that everybody hates the short sword the hero has, i think it is an enjoyable game to play.

    Check out my review!

I'm a recent converted Ys fan (got all the PSP games so far), so this game looks very interesting to me. Thank you for the review. Don't have time to watch it all today, but will tomorrow and maybe add another comment. Otherwise, I'll just add I much more enjoy games from folks who really found the most fun out of particular games. As it's very easy to just play games and be overly critical of them as most folks love to do. But finding what makes a game really enjoyable & really putting in the time, well. It's very hard. So we instead end of with folks just bashing everything left and right in seconds from minimal gameplay that lead in giving up and writing off...

I agree with what you are saying. Sometimes we are so afraid of wasting our time that we rely on the general consensus of how the game is percieved. So we go online and check a quick review instead of just wiping away all opinions and just starting the game on a clean slate.

We should just start playing any old game as if we just rented it and there was no other game we could play, easier said than done i know...

But with reviewers like AVGN, it started a wave of bashing games instead of trying to fing the good in them. But i really love his reviews and he is really good at what he does, it's just an example.

K, I watched the whole video instead of skimming through it just now as I had the time for it. And it really was great. Especially loved it when you showed the game's Artwork to enhance showcasing the game. Especially the world map one. What a beautiful map. Love videogame maps of this kind. Really makes my imagination soar. Especially back in the days when I was a kid (me and my brother have always been disappointed that SMW2: Yoshi's Island never had a world map and that Nintendo continued on this route for quite some time. He's happy to finally see world maps return to the recent Mario games).

I don't have a YouTube account, as bookmarking my vids is just as good. So yes, you've been bookmarked. Ditto for that Secret Place: Lagoon site which really looked great too. So thanks for mentioning it too.

Also, yes, this game looks like it'll do a very nice job full filling my retro cravings too. As for some reason I really have this weird itch that make me crave & really enjoy first gen SNES & Genesis games. Games from this time really interests me because it was just before 16-Bit games started shying away from 8-style of gaming and toward more of a casual streamlined feel of later 16-Bit game + eventually leading to what we have nowadays.

Yes, it would be nice if folks would just play games as if they were a weekend rental like we all did in the past.

And AVGN, myself and my brother love that show too very much. But I know it's just a show and he goes to extremes to make games look bad just for humor, unlike many others. ie. my brother, lol. So I always have to correct him when my BS senses go off.

In true Sega-16 fashion I'll say this: Lagoon sucks.
At least, I could never enjoy it (SNES). I'll still check the video out all the same.
He glanced over at the head on a stake 'A Hunnic trophy, I think the man was a Visigoth He died at the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields I keep it here so that I may see it every day and remember' 'Remember what, Father?' I asked him

The scent of a burning village The sound of butchery The way peasants would flee before the Hun riders The way we would ride them down The way it felt to conquer alongside Attila and the Huns

He leaned so close I could feel his breath 'Sometimes... I miss it'

So now that you seen the video, think you might of been to harsh on the game and maybe give it a second chance?

No, but the video was good. I did forget about the music though - it's been many years since I heard it last and some tracks are worth listening to.

Really liked the video. Lagoon looks a lot better than I was lead to believe it was. I'll try to get a hold of it at some point.

    Lagoon; A work of art.
    The review video; Good.
    The reviewer; No comment.
I will say this about the game though,
    THE MUSIC IS CAPTIVATING.
Watch out, it might capture your mind as well.

    Thanks for the comments!

@ Xalphenos: well you are in luck because Lagoon is really cheap to buy! You could probably get it for 5-10$.

Never knew about the jump to avoid enemy projectiles.
Gonna have to replay this and see if it changes things for me.
I think I actually got stuck at the castle where the song is really catchy,
from what I can recall, there were lions there that I could not beat and sold the game in 2001 among many others to get a launch PS2.

The bosses, some of them i really had a hard time with, some are really hard. That made me think of how patient and much will we had as kid to beat a game. How did 12-years old kids beat that game and many others?! Again like i said in the review i did not jump at any of them!

If/when you try again, let me know how it went jumping to avoid projectiles.

Persistence more than patience. Think back to when you didn't have any more options than what you had for 8-16 bit consoles. You had to make do with what little you had, so you were going to beat everything you could within your limited library.

Also, a friend with a kid reminded me, when you're into video games at that age, they can do no wrong. (How many people really complained about LJN before there was an AVGN?)

As for this game, if I have no interest, it's because of the adventure genre on the whole. I like the challenging, shorter, more linear games more.

Great review! Not sure how you were able to show off that "3D looking" town early on in the video followed by the cool spinning of a 3D box, but both effects were amazing to me.

Lagoon was one of those childhood games I always wanted to play but never did. There is a charm to old early gen 16-bit titles indeed. They more closely resemble 8-bit before 16-bit "really became" 16-bit, as another poster said. There's a charm to those early games for sure. I remember being haunted by the Lagoon ad in old GamePro magazines, lol. It always captured my imagination.

I played through the game a couple years ago. I enjoyed it for what it is. Thank you for pointing out the gameplay technique of letting enemies walk to you. That's how I played it, and it made it quite satisfying. I never had a HUGE issue with the small sword size, because there were ways around it, like the one you mentioned.

Overall, Lagoon is OK. I would never call it good myself, but I liked it and am glad I played through it.
Good review, Psycho. BTW, you sound and even look like you could be Cesaro's brother (a wrestler in the WWE).
