Game Gear cover art scans?

I'm surprised that the Cover Project has very few GG box scans overall. I finally took to the idea of maybe boxing my GG games using Nintendo DS cases and simple modification. The problem is, the lack of inserts available. At least, I don't know of anywhere where you can find many GG scans. I could make them from scratch, but it's really hard to find decent pics of the back cover artwork for the boxes.

Anyone here at Sega-16 box up their GG games using DS cases, or perhaps dabble in making artwork for them? Maybe have some boxed games you could scan? I think we should get a cover art thread going for GG, much like we have over in Genesis / MD.

I'm contemplating spending a few hours to make some from scratch, but I really hate using poor low res images.

I'm not sure. If there were scans of manuals, I'd probably piece them together and resize them to DS dimensions since that's the route I'm going.

So here is my first experimental run at this. I threw together this NBA Jam cover and printed it out. The reason it looks a bit washed out is because I used just plain multi-purpose paper, because I don't have any thin glossy photo paper at the moment. You really need to use photo paper to get a sharp colorful result. The dimensions for the print were referenced from Cover Project, but I found them slightly off - a tiny bit short and a tiny bit skinny. So for future attempts, I will up the size 1/16th.











For the cart, I removed the top and left side walls of the DS cart slot, leaving the right corner and the bottom half. What you wanna do, is mark it as close as you can to the width of your Game Gear cart depending on which way you want to orient the cart, then score the edges... then use a pair of biting pliers to remove the plastic. If you do it right, your cart should fit snug between the space created and the spine, so that it doesn't move and won't rattle around inside the case. It won't look very pretty, but it should do the job.

I'd like to do more of these cases, because I have a few Game Gear carts myself. If anyone is interested in this DS conversion, I can upload the "template" I've created with the dimensions and the center spine all ready to go, all you need to do is edit and slap on the artwork. Of course it's best to use good photo editing software and clean up any images or scans you use to make sure it doesn't come out looking horrible.

EDIT: I'm still not sure how I'll go about doing those older style covers. To make them uniform with the purple pinstripe games, or not. I'm not sure what the spines of those types actually look like.

If a game is loose with no other materials 99% of the time I will just keep it stored loose. Exceptions being if it is rare/expensive and I'd like some extra protection for it.

My issue exactly. I was toying with the idea of Genesis or Master System size carts but have not really tried anything yet.

Handhelds older than DS usually aren't so much my thing, so to me completeness matters less. But I just don't like loose handheld carts of any sort because they're too small and usually end up stored away somewhere where I forget about them, so to me, this is an alternative to make them more presentable. I'm working with some pretty crappy images, but as long they're identifiable, that's good enough for me. I've only got about 20 GG games, so I figure that's all I'll do.

I adjusted the spine color on this one a bit, Cover Project has the spines way too pink where they are actually more purple, but of course with my terrible camera you can't even tell because everything is tinted and it makes it looks red.

They look good. I agree about the size of the games. Game Gear is my next collection once I complete my Master System set. Since I am a CIB collector, I was trying to find a solution like yours but the inserts are a pain to not only locate, but to find a case they fit in.

Being a CIB collector myself, I still can't see myself collecting all paper boxes. That's why I decided a long time ago to go a more conservative route and collect Game Gear titles loose with their plastic sleeves (still trying to figure out what to do with MicroMachines, though). Anyways, I think those mini clamshell plastic cases look awesome side by side.

What I will try to do, though, is experiment with making a simple "wrap-around" paper sleeve with art specific to each game. Kind of like the sleeves for the cardboard boxes on the Genesis, but for the tiny plastic clamshells on the Game Gear. Or maybe not. I like the look of them mini clamshells too much.

the manuals best fit in the Genesis or UGC, but I use cassette tape cases for may hand held games, and store my manuals in a box.

finding the cases cheap is the worst part. I go to a goodwill buy by the pound place and find as many as I can. I still need about 200 of them

Shadowfox over at The Cover Project is planning on making some Game Gear cases. He was thinking along the lines of the Master System card type cases. He's already made some awesome Genesis cases. I'm waiting on those. There are also some scans for Game Gear games over there.
