    I don't think it blew anything away either, but the reason why it is so popular is because it is was brought RPG's to the mainstream so to speak. To alot of people this was their first RPG so they have a strong felling of nostalgia and love for this game.

    I do think FF7 is a good RPG overall, I just don't think it's the revolution that it's often made out to be. And btw, the character models sucked ass. Even for the time.

    Well, once again opinions are different. I truly think FF VII was the nonplusultra of it´s time, and therefor is righteously regarded as one of videogame-history´s greatest classics. Of course it was later surpassed by other games, but that doesn´t take anything away from the standards it set and how it brought RPGs a big step further.

    But Vehemont, you were only 8 years old when FF VII was released, I doubt you really remember the time that well. But I remember the amazed players everywhere. The praise from magazines. FF VII really made a huge wave and was called a revolution back then...because nothing before was comparable to the amazing set of virtues Square put into this game. I can say from my point that it really showed what an RPG (and a videogame) could be like after the rather simplistic 16-Bit-RPGs.

    About the character models: The characters on maps suck (although not more than 90% of all games of the time)but those in battle were also good for the time.

    Why is it that in some FMVs Cloud looks like he does in battle (tall), and in some FMVs he looks like he does when walking in towns, dungeons etc. (shrunk)?

    @Zebbe
    Yeah, that was really strange...
    I guess they were small in places where the original in-game background-graphics were used, so that the proportions of characters and surroundings fit.
    But itīs still strange. I found it strange that they decided on two different styles in the game anyway.
    I suppose in the very beginning the battle characters were planned super-deformed too; I remember the FF VI-3D-demo which used SD-charas too. Then, after numerous pre-rendered backgrounds were already done for SD-characters they decided to spice it all up a bit and make more realistic characters. But changing all backgrounds would have meant too much work, so they only used the better character-models in battles.
    Just a theory, but I guess it might be something like that.

    I can safely say that final fantasy 7 was the biggest thing to happen to the gaming industry since sonic the hedgehog, and nothing since has caused such a wave of hype, excitement, lauding reviews and converted gamers.... Regardless of wheter one likes the game or not, this title shook the world
