I've actually never played it, nor do I think I own it, but I have heard it's a poor man's Sonic.

Whoa. No way. It's the best platforming game on Mega Drive, in my personal opinion. Hell, it's my favourite platforming game of all time. No joke.

I can see the poor man's sonic comparison but I think Ristar is right up there with sonic. Ive been trying to hunt down a copy of this forever but I can't find it locally and its actually pretty scare on ebay so i dont think 5 euros was a bad deal at all for it.

Ristar plays differently enough from the Sonic games to stand on its own and to me it's one of the top 5 MD platformers. It's an excellent game that puts a smile on my face just thinking about it ^^
You can tell that they tried to experiment with the tired platform formula and most of the time it works great. Nice amount of replay value too, with all those unlockables.

It's not bad. I wish they had spent a little more time and memory on the sound effects, though. They're really bad.

The explosions are also quite lame and all look the same.

By the way, does anyone know if the person who did the music for this game
is the same person who did it for World of Illusion? Ristar's level complete theme
reminds me of the ending theme of World of Illusion. Could be coincidence of
course but I was just wondering...

Ristar and Dynamite Headdy are the two best non-Sonic type platformers on the Genesis, IMO.

It's an excellent platformer: take Sonic, take away his speed and inject him with a massive dose of sugar. I don't mind cutesy games, but each level feels like an overstuffed cartoon, as though it can't decide whether it's a cutesy romp or a solid platformer, and tries to do both.

I don't believe so. Tomoko Sasaki did all the music for Ristar, and I don't see that name anywhere on the credits for World of Illusion. Probably just a coincidence.

With that said, Ristar is indeed a brilliant platformer. The music in particular is quite awesome - it even used software mixing on the DAC samples, to simulate multiple drum layers. That game's a piece of work, for sure.

One of the top 5 games on the Genesis in my opinion. Absolutely gorgeous graphics and addictive gameplay. The games namesake is pretty lame, but the game itself makes up for it bigtime. It's a shame that it was overlooked back when it came out.

Someone in the comments section of the review said it was "Sega's answer to Kirby." I think that is a very good comparison.

Indeed. Dare I say that American developers knew how to program voices in Genesis games better than Japanese developers? Look at SoJ, Capcom & Konami's Genesis games. More grain than a loaf of Arnold's Whole Wheat Bread..........*goes to the kitchen*

I had this before the ***** took my Genny system. I had never gotten around to playing it, though. Thankfully it's on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection so I guess I'll give it a spin. (I know it's not the same, but 40 bucks for all that Sega goodness is awesome beyond awesome)
