I got this game about a month ago for $3.99 or $2.99 at a thrift store. I love it. One of the best platformers for the Genesis. I'm really glad I picked this one up.

for those of you calling it "the poor man's sonic," let it be known that Ristar was the original concept for "Sonic." By that I mean it was the creator's first idea for a killer app Genesis platformer, and they decided they wanted to make it faster to show off the Genesis processor and morphed it into Sonic. Overall, Ristar is a phenomenal game.

Also for those calling it "the poor man's Sonic," let it also be known it usually costs a lot more to buy Ristar than any of the Sonic games.

Ristar is really overrated, it doesn't know what it's supposed to be and never really finds it's full potential, I think the best thing about it is the amazing graphics.

Overall I'd say Ristar is a pretty good game that could've been great.

I think Ristar is amazing! I've been playing it ever since it came out. It's 2nd only to Sonic 3 & Knuckles

You're right. I just got Ristar today from a seller on Ebay. The game is really quite beautiful for a platformer game. I especially like the bosses. It's not quite as good as Dynamite Headdy but it's a great addition to my genesis collection nonetheless.

Heh, then I guess you could call it a rich man's Sonic?

I myself have never played this game. Seems rather interesting though.

It really is a fun game. Definitely one of the must-have platformers for the Genesis. I don't understand too much why it is always getting compared to the Sonic games, the only similarity is that it's a platformer made by the same team.

Did this game only get an US release in paper-box form?

I was wondering the same thing. Although the cart I received is in mint condition, the paper box is pretty beat up. As an avid Genesis collector, I would love to know if there is the hardcover box type.

I'm pretty sure there is no clamshell case. Only cardboard. You could always make a custom box though.

Ristar's gameplay has slower and more deliberate pacing through the levels. It feels like the developers want you to savor each level and carefully explore for all its secrets. That's typically the pacing I like in games anyway.

Sounds like Sonic R in the exploration and secrets aspect.
