The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

    What's wrong with Saturn Shinobi?

There is already a Samurai 4x4 in the garage, so there is no point for Saturn and its plethora of racing games.

    Dreamcast
    Rayman 2
    Sonic Shuffle
    Sega GT
    Ecco
    Shenmue

I've found most Saturn games to be comparatively short for some reason. Truth be told, I'd rather smuggle in a PSX instead.

Even after buying a Saturn and a few keystone games my immediate impression of the console continues to be one reminiscent of near ambiguity - partly from growing up and only ever reading about the system; the Saturn really was the most mismanaged console for it's time and it's abandoned by Sega leaves a lingering impression of unmerited failure. For me personally, the only two things against the Saturn has always been not having a single legitimate Sonic game released and then also the name 'Saturn' itself - I don't know about anyone else but the first thought that ever comes to my mind is always the planet and therefore don't understand the relation... Sega Genesis 2, now that I may have bought.

All that said, I'd probably still go with a Saturn.

I think the Dreamcast really did have a following at the time and was able to sell an image and more memorable titles than the Saturn so it has had much more of an enduring reputation rather than the obscurity the Saturn was struck with. To be a 2D powerhouse in an emerging 3D world was so unforgiving at the time, I feel the Saturn has aged best because of it.

Sometime in 1999 or 2000 I purchased the Dreamcast and I loved Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, Dead or Alive 2 but most other titles seemed to eventually find their place on other competing consoles and that's why to me it begins to feel that the games that were exclusive to the Saturn truly were defining.

    My ten would be:

    Burning Rangers - Sega - 1998
Galactic Attack (Ray Force) - Taito - 1995
    Guardian Heroes - Treasure - 1996
    Magic Knight Rayearth - Sega - 1998
    Nights into Dreams - Sega - 1996
Panzer Dragoon Saga - Team Andromeda - 1998
    Saturn Bomberman - Hudson Soft - 1997
    Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Capcom - 1996
    Virtua Fighter 2 - Sega - 1995
Virtual On: Cyber Troopers - Sega - 1996

Runner-ups would be games like Albert Odyssey, Darius Gaiden, Sonic Jam, Virtua Cop 2 (if I had someone with me on the island I might switch this one in), and the other Panzer games. Never could get into the 3D Shining games, sorry.

    My peripherals would be:

Wireless Saturn controller (DAMN YOU EUROPE!)
    3D controller
    RAM Cart
    Netlink Adaptor

I understand the appeal of Jet Set Radio, Shenmue or Skies of Arcadia but if Sonic Adventure had made its way on the Saturn, it would have been be a wash for me. Also the import scene for the Saturn is impressive and it's a shame Policenauts never made its way over...

No need to be sorry, it's an opinion thread. There's no right or wrong answer in this case.

Great thread. Nice change to the usual ones that have been clogging up this section for a while.

Yeah, the DC had amazing homebrew support. One of the best things about it when I got the system in the early 00's is going over how many great emulators, games, and other stuff people coded for it. Could happily survive on a desert island just with homebrew titles, no joke.

I always thought that the name Genesis was an odd name choice for their 16-bit offering, Mega-drive is a much cooler sounding name. Dreamcast is the most odd name of all of Sega's consoles though.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

You have that backwards. Mega Drive is the most generic "tryhard to sound cool" name I've ever heard. Genesis is the best system name ever.

You have no idea how utterly American Genesis sounds. This is a bad thing.

Yes, I'm aware I'm gonna lose sooo much rep power over this. Mega Drive just sounds so much more awesome! Like an awesome 80s musclecar!

Bah. Mega Drive sounds like something that plays racing games only. Genesis sounds way cooler. "The beginning of the 16-bit revolution!"

As much as I enjoy my Saturn I'll have to go with Dreamcast for this one.

    As for the games :

Sonic Adventure - For me , when it was released, this was the title I was hoping to play since I was a teen. Bright colours, Sega Blue sky, cartoony story and mesmerizing graphics.

Shenmue - An experience more than a game. I remember keeping one spare VMU to keep a save file where I was just playing around, not following the story. I remember discovering many special events and playing this title a LOT of times. This goes for Shenmue II too, although I will always prefere the atmosphere and stage of the first game.

Shenmue 2 - Same as Shenmue

Phantasy Star Online - You may think it can be boring to play alone, but actually I usually played this offline back then, since I couldn't make my parents spend so much on their phone bill. I enjoy crawling countless times through dungeons, finding new equipment, evolving my MAG and trying out all the different classes. Again, this was another "VMU eater" as I had to keep around a bunch of them for different characters.

Virtua Striker 2 2000.1 - I loved this game as a teen, in every Virtua Striker I'd strive to get the highest rank on the cabinets and when I was not playing vs on beat em ups I was challenging people on this. Actually I even bought my Saturn thinking it would get a Virtua Striker port.

Soul Calibur - I didn't enjoy playing versus on 3D fighters, i enjoyed playing them single player (grew up with 2D fighters, so I never could adapt on a competitive level) and this, at the time, had an incredibly rich single player department. One of the reasons I bought my Dreamcast.

Grandia II - All around great JRPG, would really help me pass the time on a desert island.

Skies of Arcadia - I would prefer the GC one (mostly for the tweaked random encounters and the different pirates you can hunt down) but I will happily settle with the DC version. Lots of exploration, very good combat system and one of the most straightforward but deep character growth sytems out there.

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike - I remember playing this version to death until the superior (almost arcade perfect) PS2 version came out.

Virtua Fighter 3 TB - I know many of you will think I'm crazy but this is still the only "official" VF3 on any console and VF3 has been a very particular title for me, almost esoteric. From reading magazines hyping up the model 3, to playing it in the only arcade that had it in my town...this title always escaped me one way or another. On that fateful day of 1998, finally seeing it sitting on a store shelf was incredible for me. This was the Dreamcast game that really made me NEED a dreamcast. Too bad that upon playing it i discovered it differed quite a lot from the arcade version.

    5 accessories
4 VMU and 1 arcade stick
