The Demon Graveyard is where you will find the Demon Protection Grass. However, the Graveyard is only accessible once you have gone through the Crystal World (mermaid's palace) and obtained the proper shoes to allow travel over the thorn patches.

    Thanks!

I didn't realize that that part of the terrain was thorns. Doh!

I find the regular battles rather tedious, but overall this is a nice game. The dialogue is great.

    Stuck again!

I'm having trouble figuring out the Book Puzzle. I know the red book 'The Only Passage' is the key to unlocking the door, but I don't know what to do with it.
I tried using it on the grey square in the room where you get all the books but it didn't do anything.

    Here's a hint:

Before the prince can face the final enemy, he must unburden himself and his heart. Perhaps giving away the items he no longer needs to someone less fortunate than he would accomplish this? Wasn't there a very poor woman, in the Capital?

Thanks again. Funnily enough, I already gave her most of my items - but I didn't think I'd have to give her my food too.

Only problem now is that I can't beat the Evil Cat Minister without those items; was I by any chance supposed to save my uses of the Sun Instrument for this battle? I thought my fight with him before was the last so I went ahead and used them all.

I think that means you're in deep shatt.

    I figured as much.

Fortunately I still have a save file in the Cat Hole before I fought the Evil Cat Minister. Lucky!

I was wondering if users could give a good critique of this game. I am thinking about purchasing this game and would love to hear your opinion. Are there striking similarities in gameplay to other games? Please list the positive or negative aspects.

    Thanks in advance.

Pros- Packaging, Originality compared to other RPGs, Script writing, decent graphics.

Cons- No depth to gameplay, clueless linear progression, music is forgettable.

It's a well written RPG with a good polished script, the graphics are pretty good too for Genesis.

Unfortunately at it's core, it's a 'mediocre' game.
It has that Narrow feeling, where you go from point-A to point-B with not much else to do. Getting there is half the battle since the gameplay is truly more old-school than the era it was originally crafted in.

If you compare it to other RPGs, It definitely has that 'Pre-Phantasy Star 3 era' sense of pacing instead of an actually engaging story. It feels like you're 'expected' and not 'compelled' to talk to everybody so maybe something will happen to trigger and advance the game, or your understanding of the plot.

The menu system is a little clunky and the cursor is touchy, even in battles. The battle system itself is cool for being different, but it really lacks depth.

This game gets props for not being a carbon copy of something else in the genre, but it's still average at best in execution.

The hype behind it being something new to play certainly scored it a few points at release, but no amount of nostalgic 'good intentions' can push me to enjoying an otherwise stale experience.

There are various professional press and casual gamer reviews of Beggar Prince linked directly from its official website (Here's a link).

If you have any questions about the game itself, and can't find the appropriate answers on the website, please feel free to ask me directly.

Thanks for your interest in the game.

KD, I have to disagree on it being an average at best game, the thing is fun, engaging and kept me going for a long time. I'll write a little counter-review, not to start an argument but just to give another perspective.

Pros- Great art, excellent tech support (this thread *is* 86 pages long already), unique menuing system during gameplay, good sound effects

Cons- box was a bit flimsy, music gets repetetive, no walkthrough available, has some glitches which makes you have to save a lot

Classic RPG, you have goals to achieve, and you go back and forth between goals, just as you would in a tabletop game.

The menu system during the game is confusing at first, but it gets to be routine and easy to navigate after the first few times of using it.

Cursor of the menu is touchy, but it's one of those things that you get used to and no longer is a problem, but gives you that quick-draw effect because when you menu in a battle the clock does NOT slow down and it becomes a huge advantage.

There are props to other games and movies all through the games and it really adds to the experience of playing it in a good way.

imho, it's been totally worth the purchase, it got to me fast and I have gotten all kinds of advice from CMA Death Adder. It's a mainstay for my collection and I will never sell it. I can say it's on-par with Secret of Evermore as far as overall fun factor.
I'm not gonna go get humped by a giant red ape in space.

I already posted my impressions somewhere in this thread: I think the game ranks right up there among the very best Genesis RPGs. I love the graphics and especially the music: It's light years ahead of any Western developed Mega Drive / Genesis game (sound & atmosphere, not necessarily composition).
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.
